It's been a while since last I dropped by this thread. So to update and reiterate, somewhere out there there's a person that hates you. And that person is me.

Hi, I am a huge fantasy buff. I have had all of Malazan on my Kindle for a few years and keep putting off reading them. I did start them a couple of years ago and got as far as MoI. But this time I am determined to read it through. I am fairly fickle with my liking of characters, they usually are black and white. rare is the character whom is grey. I am about half-way through tGotM. Looking forward to interacting and chatting with other fans.

Greetings!

Call me a fan of the epic and gritty fantasy genres. Amongst my favorite series are the Elric Saga, the Demon Cycle, The First Law trilogy, and of course the Lord of the Rings opus. Although I've read quite a bit in the genre, and have over twenty-five years of RPG-ing experience in fantasy, I am totally new to the Malazan world. I can't wait to dive right in! I've heard the series can be quite daunting, especially with the first book. I'm sure this web-resource will provide massive assistance along the way.

This post is meant to not only introduce myself but also to thank this community for helping noobs like me navigate the Malazan opus. ;)

Cheers!

Arn

Hello to all you new people here and especially to those who are just starting out on the Malazan adventure. I am green with envy that you still have that first encounter with so many amazing characters ahead of you. Although, the first re-read almost tops that. Alas, I am on the umpteenth reread now at which point they call it 'getting a fix' rather than reading!

Have fun!!!

Hi everyone.

I am going to start these books soon, the ten by Erikson to start and if I really love it I will get more. I have heard that it is very complex, so I am wondering if there is a safe place to ask questions as I'm reading through that won't get answered with a bunch of spoilers. Also, any other general advice on how to tackle such a huge series is welcome. Anyway, I guess if I do really enjoy them and hang around here a bit I may end up sticking around when I'm done, so hello to everyone I may become friends with in the coming months.

Also, has anyone here read the original Dune series? I'm going to read that before I start these. I've read the first one and loved it but have never kept going till now.

Hi, colten. To answer your question, for each book forum it is presumed that you have read up through that book. So if you are just starting the 5th book, Midnight Tides, for instance, you should not read the subforum for Midnight Tides (only the first 4 book subforums will be safe to read). That said, if you have questions on the 5th book while you are reading it, you should start your own thread in the 5th book subforum, and make it clear how far along you are, and everyone else will oblige you by not spoiling things.

Advice: just go with the flow, don't worry about understanding everything that's going on (or memorizing all the supplementary information), and read more than one book before you form an opinion. Have fun.

Alright, that's about my plan. After reading some opinions I thinking, "Am I gonna have to take notes on this thing?" but I think that I'm just gonna go with it and see what happens. If I like it I won't take too long to read them so I won't forget stuff because of that. Is the first book really that much worse than the others? I read the first 50 pages or so on amazon preview and it seemed like a good start to me.

It's awesome, but gathering context does have a snowball effect as you move through the series. And I think it speaks to how good GotM is that even on a reread -- even with some noticeable flaws in retrospect -- it still holds up marvelously and perhaps even improves.

That's what I like to hear. You are making me even more anxious to read it. It will motivate me to read the ten other books I'm reading before I start this even faster.

Hello. 10 Books done, also Laughter and Corpses (great stuff, really).

I just want a TV series based on this novel. That is all I'm asking. Oh, and there should my favourite music (added a post in music topic) on it.

Glad there are so many fans of the series.

I have tried to read GoTM on two different occasions. For some reason, I just can't seem to get through it. I just for some reason get bored with it, put it down for a couple of days, and never come back to it. I guess I joined this site looking for encouragement to give GoTM a third try. I have seen too many people refer to this series as one of the best for too long just to simply not read it.
Is it just the first book that drags on? I have heard that other volumes are significantly better than the first.
I have read The Black Company and I really enjoyed it. I have seen it said that MBotF are quite similar in content and story if not in prose.
What am I missing here? Why can't I get through with this simple, less than seven hundred page novel?
I want to like it. I really do. Can anyone convince me to?
