Re-reading this series is highly recommended. Things become clearer, more connections are made and the emotions get deeper.

The reads even change as I get more life experience too. The "being a parent" stuff I can't fully connect to yet, but many other things I didn't have the real-world equivalents happen to me or be the result of my actions to fully appreciate yet.

Granted, the re-reads took me years (from 2004 until now) and it did mean I wasn't doing other things, but I saw it as worth it. Nine years and probably seven or eight times through each book.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Wow, that's quite a few reads. I wonder who actually has the most re-reads, just out of curiosity.

and so the "I've re-read the series X number of times so I am awesomer than anyone" thread was born

Thanks WW
Thanks a lot

I have read the whole series each time a new book came out in the SE arc, as far as I can remember up to the Crippled God. I haven't re-read anything since then.

Hi!

I'm fairly new to the series (just finished HoC), but the world has captured my attention more than any other fantasy I've read, even though Errikson isn't always the best at descriptions. But that's why I come here.

Another new member here, and I already have to disagree with someone, in this case the previous poster; I personally love Erikson's descriptions. Brisk, to the point, yet very powerful.

Anyway, I signed up both because I wouldn't mind discussing the books (once I finish, anyway; I'm almost finished with Memories of Ice, which is shaping up to be my favorite of the series), and because this site seems great for discussing other sci-fi/fantasy books as well.

Hey guys, gals, teblor, assail, trell, jaghut, tiste, ascendants and gods alike. Finally remembered to join after being on the Facebook group for a while. Recently finished the original 10 books, must have welled up every other page!!! I am now on Return of the Crimson Guard. Loving it large! Also just bought my Subterranean Press Memories of Ice too, so happy! Just need to get Gardens of the Moon and Deadhouse Gates somehow! Haha. That's enough about me I think, looking forward to discussions with everyone!

Bewildered and fully engrossed reader/listener here. Been lurking since the start of the year, figured it's time to get started here. There is a Facebook page?
Currently on House of Chains, hallway through. I've not opened an Esslemont book yet and I didn't open Deadhouse Gates - got the audiobook for that one.
How integral are the Esslemont books? I have a hard time accepting a new book series/writer... Very picky and tend to look at new writers like a potential girlfriend who might have an STD...so I'm wary. It took me almost 6 years giving bedroom eyes to Erickson's books before I let him infect me.

You can read the entire MBOTF w/o the ICE books and understand the story. The ICE books do interact with them such that some storylines start with SE and end with ICE (and vice versa, "end" used somewhat loosely either way). The only way to find out if you'll like ICE's books is to read them, but they all tend to have divisive reputations. They are integral if you want to know about other stories in the Malazan world that SE isn't telling, basically, and not so much in terms of getting through MBOTF. I personally would recommend that you read them at some point down the road, as the only other option is dying without ever having read them.

Oh I didn't mention spoilers, and there are occasionally cross spoilers between the series too, so if you care about that then at HoC you're still able to integrate ICE into your order w/o any problems.

So read them or die not knowing what happened? Bwuahahaha. When you put it that way, I guess I'll have to take a look now. I'm not even sure what the reading sequence is for integrated reading of both writers' work. That is probably the easy part. Hard part is convincing the wife, after I've spent about 100 bucks on the SE books that I need to spend more.

There are several threads on this board regarding reading order, and the order of book sub-forums is pretty on point in its own right. But to be honest, if you only integrated ICE's first two books and left the rest for post-MBOTF, you'd be on pretty solid ground...first three and you're totally golden, as far as I recall. I also don't want to oversell it: if you left all of ICE till after MBOTF, it's fairly likely when you come to a crosspoint you'd be more like "Oh, so that's what that meant" rather than "Dang, that got totally spoiled"...with a couple key exceptions.

Salutations Malazites! I'm really glad I found this site. I am a quarter way through Memories Of Ice and loving every moment of it. Hope to have tons of long conversations here and maybe even get some of my many (nay, bloody whole lot) doubts cleared. I don't think I have ever read anything so ambitious in my life and what a challenge it is.

Well, as this is an introductory thread, I would just like to say "hello" and make an introduction.

So, first of all, hello there!

Now, for the introduction:

I'm a moderate to big Erikson fan, currently half-way through a second read of the Malazan Book of the Fallen: I've just started rereading "The Bonehunters". The only curious thing about my reread is that I haven't actually read the last book, The Crippled God, yet. The reason I've signed up for the forum is that I would like to talk about the series and join in on the discussions about the "loose ends" and ambiguities . Another reason is that I would like to improve my grasp of the English language, as it is not my native language and I would like to improve my active language skills. (My comprehension is fine.)

Well, as introduction threads are usually not that well-read, I'll wrap things up and join the rest of the fora.

I've been reading the forums for a while, finally decided to get involved :(
Been a HUGE Erikson fan since I picked up House of Chains from a used book shop in Chiang Rai when I was backpacking in S-E Asia. The beginning - the whole Karsa bit - remains one of my favourite bits of writing. Obviously with HoC being the 4th book i struggled to understand bits/most of the book, but when i got back home I picked up GotM and started from there. I've read the whole series and it is by far my favourite fantasy series out there. His characters are just fantastic. Just got through my second reading of SEs series and am currently reading ICEs (just finished OST).

Anyway, been enjoying the forum for ages (i've had many of my questions answered by various posts, so I figured it was intro time :D

Hi, new on the block. Read the series numerous times and I agree, due to the complexity, re-read can bring a lot of detail to the story. Womdering though if readers starting up on the story shoudl actually wait for the Karkanas trilogy to complete? It could put the entire Malazan series in a whole new perspective. Anyway, I plan the re-read everything after Karkanas just to see...

Nope, no wait. Read it. Read it again. Then reread it with the trilogy. Then reread the trilogy.

Hello all,
I'm currently into my third or fourth re-read of the series, up to Reapers Gale. I am a huge fan of this series, and of Steven Erikson. He is hands-down my favourite author. I've no idea why it took me so long to think of looking for a forum, but sure, I made it. :) So, as I'm pretty sure introductory threads are not read that much, that'll do. HEllo again

Hello all. I just joined to become involved in the discussions of the series.

I am currently up to date with Erikson through Reaper's Gale and I am about halfway through Night of Knives. I plan on reading Toll the Hounds next, and most likely saving the majority of ICE novels until after MBOTF is completed. This series is amazing and I'm glad there is a website to discuss this amazing series.
