I work for a Book Distribution warehouse, and am a game development hobbiest. Came to the malazan series by way of Glen Cook. Here mostly for forgotten bits of info and clarifications while I work on my hobby project.

ooh, careful or Abyss will eat your brains for the warehouse codes :p

Avid reader of epic fantasy. MBoTF is my favorite series. Just registered today and did my first post. Been a lurker since before the format change.

Enjoy all the insight and opinions on here.

Thanks.

I had lurked here for quite a while. Last year I started de-lurking to a greater extent in many places. I've been doing a lot over in the tor reread and it seemed like a good time to contribute here, also.

I must admit I am another that was guilty for lurking. I've been peeking at conversations on here for the last six months or so, and finally felt like joining in. As to series progress, I am currently halfway through Stonewielder after having it imported.

Hello all,

Long time reader of fantasy novels, and since 2006 an avid reader of the Malazan books. My copies are all but worn through because I have re-read the series al least once a year since I started. So you can imagine how my copy of Gardens of the moon looks like right now.

Hi all,

first I love the site.

I started on GotM about 8 or 9 months ago and am currently reading Reaper's Gale. I read a lot; always have a book on the go and get twitchy if I leave home without one. I've read a lot of fantasy and other (mostly historical) fiction. I read a lot of Henry Treece as a kid and others such as Conan-Doyle, Richard Adams. I discovered Tolkien when I was about 13, Stephen Donaldson when I was about 20. I read and absolutely LOVED Manda Scott's Boudica series a few years ago and really didn't expect to find another writer who would move me like she did with her writing. Now I'm halfway through the 7th book of this awesome series and I'm already wondering what the hell I can read after these books that could even come close to filling the gap they will leave when I finish them. Not looking forward to waiting a year for each new publication!

I can honestly say they are the best I've ever read; I have been recommending them to all my friends, but I'm afraid to say the epic scale of the series has put off everyone I've tried to entice so far. Their loss, hehe!

Hey everyone!

Just dropping in to say hello. I had read Gardens of the Moon over last summer, then got inundated with work and school. However, meeting Esselmont and Erikson at the WFC in Ohio at the end of October brought the series back to the forefront, and now I'm playing catch-up... hopefully I'll be caught up by the time Crippled God comes out! I'm currently half-way through Bonehunters.

I'll be reading y'all in the forums!

I came by the Malazan Empire by complete chance. I decided to get a kindle app for my iPhone so as I have something to do on my hour long commute to and from work each day; something to stop me feeling bitter about all the wasted time. I have always been a passive fan of fantasy stories and had a preference for it over anything else, so, I decided to browse that genre on Amazon. Before that day, sometime last December, I hadn't even heard of the Malazan Empire, let alone its creators: Esslemont and Erikson. I was a little apprehensive about being let down and no other book was worth the risk for me other than Knife in the Night. very difficult to get to grips with for the first half, especially given that I had had no exposure to the Malazan world before. But I endured, determined to get my money's worth by not giving up. Once I got past a certain threshold, I was hooked and I wanted to read more and more. I moved onto the Return of the Crimson Guard and made very short work of it indeed, then Stonewielder. I decided to stick with the Esslemont thread because I was keen to see it through before I considered Erikson and I believe I did the right thing.

I am now on Garden of the Moon, and the context Esslemont's books have given to it makes it all the more gripping. I can see how it would have been a difficult read if I had not started with Esslemont! I would definitely recommend this approach for any other Malazan newb.

Glad to have found this forum too, it will be of great help for me in painting a more accurate picture of the Malazan Empire and its brilliant characters in my mind;s eye.

Just doing my part, realized I have never browsed non-spoiler threads so allow me to introduce myself, I'm Canadian, I grew up in Victoria and went to post sec.school nextdoor to the Cafe where a lot of the magic was made. Erikson books came to me through a friend who saw me reading a copy of The Dragon Reborn and offered me a copy of Gardens. I was on my third rotation of 'the Wheel' when I realized I need to branch out. The Book of the Fallen caught me completely unawares. Tiste what? Anomander whom? What's a Caladan Brood? I fell in love with Cotillion and Ammanas from the get go, and recognized them for what they were, schemers and loveable fiends. Something about Kruppe and Whiskeyjack, Paran, all these captivating people, warrens, possessions, soul transference, demons! Gods! Elder Gods!?! flying fortresses, talking ravens, alchemy, asssasins, Rallick Nom! man the list goes on! Gardens is my favorite episode of the series, but only because the pace and the setting is so 'fresh-out-the-gate'. I still love the rest of the series. Another favorite is Reapers Gale, specifically the part with Ruin and Fiddler and Hedge. I will elaborate no more, any true fan would know...
'lo there do i see my father. lo there so i see my mother and my sister and my brother. lo do they bid me to come to them and take my place, in the hallowed halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live forever.'

I just wanted to take a moment to say 'Hello' to all of you! I am a new Malazan addict. I have read great fantasy for much of my life, and have just rediscovered Erikson's "The Malazan Book of the Fallen." Let me explain. About ten years ago, I bought the first two books of the series. I tried "Gardens of the Moon" a couple of times and seemed to get bogged down. Eventually, I pushed both books on to my favorite used book store. A few years ago I joined both Shelfari.com and Goodreads, com and kept encountering all of these glowing references to this series. After re-reading Robert Jordan's WoT series for the umpteenth time I decided to just bite-the-bullet and give Erikson another go. Absolutely the most brilliant thing I've ever done.

I am now just about finished with "Midnight Tides." In fact, I am so enamored with the series that not only did I purchase them all in mass-market paperback, but I have now purchased them all in hardcover too. As a geologist I have always been incredibly fascinated with anthropology and archaeology (and continue to eat up Jean Auel's 'Earth's Children' series), and the 'Malazan' books certainly speak to that interest in a big way. Also, I recently spent several years plowing through a lot of classic literature, including the ancient Greeks, and I have to say that Erikson has connections to literature all through his novels. One thing that I have learned about Erikson--pay very careful attention to every word on the page, read the epigraphs leading off every chapter, there is simply foreshadowing of events all through these novels; and rest assured that what seems inexplicable now will make sense at some future point--but only if one pays close attention! Anyway, I'm glad to have found all of you, and look forward to exploring this amazing world that Mr. Erikson has created for all of us! Cheers! Chris

This makes me laugh so much.

Welcome all you fantastic new people! Go forth and buy many Malazan Books and then start topics in the Book Forums that you can debate about until the mass invasion of OMGWTF! old-timers that will take place in late Feb. and March.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Good day those of the Fallen.

Found my way here, somehow, after failing to scam Amazon into believing I was from the UK with the intention of getting Stonewielder for kindle. I must confess (after skimming a few forums), in a manner non-related to the Malazan world in any way whatsoever, that as confusing as these books may be, nothing compares to the confusion brought on by the random usage of seemingly on-the-spot made-up acronyms by fellow internet users that just assume everyone will know what their jumble of letters is supposed to stand for. Posted Image As I often find myself typing during WoW play "What in Hoods realm is that supposed to mean" with the oft response of "WTF are you talking about?" (After the the 6th book I found myself unwittingly using Malazan curses during my day to day routine. *shrugs*)

Picked up RG by random one day, noticed it was book 7, found GotM, been in love ever since. Recently put down GRRM's AGoT halfway through after deciding it was too... Soap Oprah--y? (Probably catch some flak for that comment) And decided to re-read the whole Malazan series, or as far as i can get before TCG comes in March. (Acronyms... Its a love/hate relationship. Love to use um, hate to try and figure out WTF everyone else is talking about)

Looking forward to joining your guys conversations on this wonderful world.
...I'm not the best with heights, Sergent.
You live in a damned tower!
It's... expected of me. Isn't it?...

Other than reading, I enjoy drawing and PC games :p

Nice to be here!
