couldn't find the answer to this in a quick search, so here goes. How the f@#$ was Endest Silann able to hold off for so long against Clip/the Dying God? I thought he was basically crippled magically when he lifted Moon's Spawn from the water? It seemed like every time you saw him in TtH he mentioned how weak he was now, and how trying to use magic at all would kill him because he couldn't handle it. I just don't know how he went from being impotent magically, to being the only hope for the Andii in Black Coral.

Well others might have a different answer but I'd say it is that he wasn't *really* that crippled, half of it was in his head. He was obviously once an extremely uber-powerful mage, and his abilities were so reduced by millenia of service culminating with hiding Moon's Spawn, but he still had some potency left, just the drastic decrease from what he once was and a feeling of failure made him depressed and believing he had nothing left. Rake knew Endest wasn't entirely out of juice, hence Rake's confidence that Endest would hold.

Ok, I guess maybe that makes sense that he just needed a good cause to enable him to unveil all his remaining potential. But when he went to visit the river Rake was worried and sent the Great Ravens to watch over him.

I agree w/ D'rek.. Silan's power is hinted at but never fully unveiled. And the Tiste Andi themselves seemed to be going through a species wide crises of the whole "what's the point? we've lived for so long, nothing changes, mother Dark left us, what do we do w/ ourselves?" attitude they have gained. I think Silann just forgot, himself, what he was capable of for a minute or two, But Rake never did, so he gave him some time off and then made sure the one man(beside himself probably) who could do the job was in the right place at the right time- which is just another reason Rake is awesome

I don't know if this was hinted at or dismissed in the book somewhere, but I'm willing to believe that MD could also have had a hand in it.

Are you sure apt? I mean if so, its a satisfactory explanation, but I thought she mentioned something to Nimander that she was very weak in this realm and could only reach through in Aranatha. That storyline confused me a bit so I could be way off there.

I think it was the fact that he just wasn't going to let Rake down.

I thought it was a bit of both as well, he had the strength within him, but he held on because of the memory of MD through the river? I assumed her proximity gave that a bit more punch.
