Do we ever get an explanation of what Garath , Envy's "Dog" is? I mean clearly it is not a normal dog. Seems almost like a hound of shadow, but isnt.

No we did not get a explanation of Garath. Envy says at one point that he could ascend to be a Hound of Shadow but has reservations about it for some reason.

Geoffray Garath was the other one.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

We never get a good explanation, but there is some hinting he is connected to K'rul somehow. When K'rul manifests in Callows to speak with Envy, Garath falls asleep. Likewise Envy and some point remarks that Garath "once peed on her robes while asleep, but that might've been K'rul playing a prank" (not exact wording). Considering the way K'rul's evolution of his abilities frequently manifests in relation to dreams (Keruli makes Gruntle and co. fall asleep, walking through Kruppe's dreams, possibly Kruppe's mule falling asleep, too), it does make a Garath-K'rul connection seem likely, not that we know just what exactly that connection would be...

We don't know much about Garath - MoI provides some good hints that build on the little we knew about the HoS from GotM, but it's sparse.

The interesting point is that back in GotM there is narrative, iirc when QB is going to speak with Ammanas/ST, that refers to at least one named Hound we never saw, and another unamed one.

(some quote fu this for me pls).

Plus we know the Hounds can reproduce, so it's entirely possible Garath is linked to them but 'switched sides' for some reason. And he did the size-changing thing that we never saw any Hound do, tho that may have been Envy's magic.

- Abyss, ...not sure, doggone it...

Are you sure the hounds didn't change size? While at Tremelor, the hounds suddenly 'changed' and scared Fiddler because they hadn't even been trying before.

The exact quote is long and I'm lazy, but QB is passing through Shadow escorted by Hounds and as he approaches each he names them. When he gets to Rood he identifies it as Rood, the pack leader, father of _____(Baran?) and mate to Pallick. Pallick is your mystery Hound who is not one of the seven that we ever see or listed in the glossary. One wonders whether there is something auspicious about seven hounds of Shadow or if there just happen to be that many at the time... *cough*

Quite the dilemma!

Dogs have litters and die occasionally.

It stands to reason that the make-up of the Hounds would periodically change - especially given the antics those particular puppies get up to.
