I'm pulling out the Hagrid card again, but my mind's eye sees him more like this (add curly hair and beard instead):

My problem with the elf chick isnt that shes a marketing ploy but that they could only justify her existence by making her a love interest because you know, to think a woman might be interesting in her own right is just ridiculous ... Sorry girls, but to hollywood you will only ever be a bit of tail.

Speaking of tails, Beorn looks like he should be in Thundercats

What is Beorn supposed to look like?

He's that "supposed" Elder God that turns into a bear, right?

He is indeed the bear guy but he's not an Elder God (perhaps you're conflating him with Tom Bombadil?).

But yeah, the picture Kaamos posted looks much more like what I imagined him to be. Big hairy wildman.

Ahh yes I was thinking of Bombadil.

I don't really mind the look. The Hobbit was a children's book, Radagast the brown also looked pretty silly. Generally, despite the carry over from the first trilogy, I expect the Hobbit movies to be lighter in tone and more silly.

I'm glad he made it into the movie (unlike Bombadil) - but he does look like he just fell off an X-Men set.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I've channeled the spirits, and that is actually exactly how Tolkien pictured him. Go figure, eh?

Reminds me a lot of the creatures from the Island of Dr. Moreau (the original from the 70s, not the shitty remake with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer) > Original Trailer

I honestly didn't figure Tolkien as a chest-waxing kind of guy.

Ohhhh!! I just can't contain myself! The latest trailer. Just over one month to go! I'm as excited and fidgety as a little girl in her brand new Sunday School dress!

Some Smaug (pronounced Smow-guh) voice work by Cumberbatch that didn't make the final cut.

How fun is it to say Benedict Cumberbatch? ... Cumberbatch .... Cumberbatch .... Cumberbatch.

Avoiding new trailers as I want to be fresher for it than I was for the first film.

What I've seen looks great though. Very excited!

What if this trilogy is the mirror image of the other one, so #1 is the pretty good entry that's a bit too focused on action scenes, #2 is grim, moody, and my personal favorite in spite of all the goofy Legolas action, and #3 is absolute magic start to finish and the general audience favorite.

Oh this one was awesome.

Aside from the Beorn stuff (he does not look QUITE as bad as he did on those stills we saw and toy pics) which straqngely feels a bit superfluous since he doesn't do much for them aside from let them crash, lend them ponies...this one was really excellent! Better than the first one simply by virtue of constantly going...plus Elves!

The Elven stuff is awesome, and asskicking, and Evangeline Lily brings it (but then she's one of my fave actors, so I'm likely biased)...and actually adding Legolas in to conflict with his father is a really nice touch...and it makes sense to have some named elves in Mirkwood...oh and the spiders...creepy!

The Barrel scene is everything you dreamed it could be and more. Clever, action-packed, and just plain fun.

Everything form the moment they meet Bard, through Laketown (which looks and feels phenomenal) through Erebor and Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch for the MF WIN!) is eye-riveting GOLD.

Loved it. Can't wait to see it again.

So I saw the Hobbit 2 - without having seen Hobbit 1. I've read the books (most of them) a couple times each, so I'm quite aware of how most things work in the Tolkien-verse.

I can see why the purists are upset about this series of movies. However, what Jackson & Co. did is to make it a true spectacle and particularly to make the Lonely Mountain/treasure hoard worth the pain and toil of the journey there.

Most of the time in the book, we're kind of wondering why the dwarves want the Lonely Mountain back. Seeing that much gold and jewels - almost an entire city floor - answers that question and makes it much more understandable that Thorin and the other dwarves wants back, the Dale men want the dwarves back in and Smaug wants to stop all of that.

Tauriel may be a new invention out of nowhere, but she fits and she makes the story a bit nicer. The same goes for the random black people in the crowd at Dale and the moving up of the capture of Gandalf by Sauron/Necromancer. This is a better adaptation/version of Tolkien being given to us than what's in the books.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I enjoyed Hobbit 2. But, despite other Malazan opinions, Kate was unnecessary. The ludicrous side-story involving Kate is ridiculous. It's Jackson filling time a la Liv Tyler: Made up bullshit to get money. Inserting the battle against the Necromancer is FAR more worthy of time than that bullshit side-story. Seriously, they easily could have cut 30 minutes.

That being said, the rest of the movie was great.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Can I ask a serious question about your complaint?

In the Hobbit book there is an Elf captain who is most front and center during the Mirkwood proceedings...he/she are not named, but important. Why does such a character being made into a female, and giving her a backstory (Silvan elf whom Legolas has feelings for) make her unnecessary?

I'll simply never understand that POV. The Elf Captain is in the books...just not fleshed out. Jackson fleshed her out to give the story more female presence. And honestly...that's a REALLY good thing.

And he didn't add more Arwen to make more money. He added her because the LOTR films are male-heavy and he wanted to balance it out. That's an artistic choice, not a monetary one.

Lastly, Evangeline Lily is a phenomenal actor and I would pay the price of admission again JUST to hear her speech to Kili about the starlight, and her dreams of being more free than she's allowed to be in Mirkwood. It was beautiful.

Sorry, I'm not saying you're wrong in your being bothered by her inclusion in the story, I'm just really curious what the root of it bothering you is?

Agree. I think either PJ is paying more attention to these things when he's shooting now, or we've actually come a bit of a way since LOTR socially in the world.

Better adaptation all around.

And I also liked tying Azog and Co. being tied to Necromancer/Sauron as a part of the coming war. I honestly feel that the most genius stroke PJ ever made in his adaptation so far (other than making Cumberbatch Smaug) is having Azog survive the Battle of Azanulbizar to become a lieutenant in Sauron's forces. It adds a much needed antagonist for the early proceedings of the story...at least in the filmic medium.
