I saw an article on this on Reddit. That article had these little media players you could click to hear the difference between the "distress purr" and the "happy purr".

I was physically uncomfortable hearing the "distress purr", I think I actually remember our cats using that trick before, I just never knew that was a reason for why they were doing it.

Dubious Kruppe Has Something to Bray!

Kruppe has had a long and storied history of interacting with felines of all stripes, and can confidently say that he has never ever heard this so-called "purr/cry." Not once. However, this is not to say that Kruppe's kitties (Mortal Sword, Destriant and Sheild Anvil) do not hold complete mastery over oppressed Kruppe, because they do.
