I always interpreted it as being extremely naive (wide-eyed as in innocent/inexperienced), meaning doing something because you didn't know any better i.e. an inexperienced soldier trying to be a hero when there's no chance of success. Another interpretation along the same lines would be an experienced person making a rookie-mistake.
Your interpretation makes as much, if not more, sense though.

Yeah, I always saw it as an expression the marines used when they were following orders they thought were going to get them killed.
So they'd march into some dangerous situation 'wide eyed stupid' as although experience told them it was a bad idea, they would have to get on and do it anyway.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I also agree that it is knowingly going into a stupid situation. Man, I love that phrase.

I read today that the QoD in HoC says that the ascendants walk an endless cycle, with all the same mistakes, and that the knowledge never slows their steps. Then L'oric says, "Wide-eyed stupid." That's the definition, then.
Suck it Errant!

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

Yeah, I only just became sure of the definition a couple days ago during a reread of HoC.
My direct interpretation was that if you go into something with your eyes closed, you were going into something being ignorant, if perhaps willfully, of the consequences. I took wide eyed as meaning that you were able to fully comprehend what you were doing or you could see the consequences to their full extent.
It's just a repeat of most of what is has been posted already, but it seems to mean going into a situation knowing full well that what you are doing is a bad idea, with no illusions. Or perhaps a better way to put it would be a stupidity not born from the lack of knowledge, but purely from an educated choice.

I think the expression is mentioned first when whiskyjack's squad are going to infiltrate darujhistan. Fits the situation perfectly.
