cheeeeeers dudes that's a lot of things sorted about the pic that I wouldn't have thought of, anyhow Trull+Onrack it is (though there's too many good ideas for the apsalar on to put it aside for very long) if anyone has any info on what they would like to see in the background, characters clothes/armour, mood, whether or not to do it anthpor...anthropathmo...anth....with dogs head on? I all ears (or eyes as the case may be)


-T&C showed up and scared the Hounds a few moments before Apsalar turned down the corridor (and then met Brokeface before fleeing via shadows). T&C would I guess be behind her though in that case...

I'll try to dig up some HoC quotes from them emerging from the Nascent do give a better idea of what I'm thinking setting-wise. Mostly it's an empty plain, slightly hilly, and maybe a tunnel-like gate closing behind them (with glimpses of an undead gorilla following them barely seen through the gate?).

O.K got some sketch ups,
pic 1.? I dunno I'm already lost again
pic 2. this is why I'm lost, I mean there is soooo much needed to make this a decent picture it's ridiculous, anyway I'll go over the problems
composition-so far there is none, I could move the figures further up but that would leave a bigger space of boring rock at the bottom (hee hee I said bottom) apart from the spear all the lines seem to be horizontal leading you eye off the page
color-I started sketchin' in light brown cuz its easier on the eyes than straight on whit so the base is warm, should it be? I'm still not sure about the scenario, D'rek has kindly said he's gonna look for some quotes and that might help solve this.
design-look for the question marks they're pretty much all over the pic...
background-this is what is goin' to make or break the pic I think, D'rek's got the only idea so far, I think it's extremely close to what I originally intended.
aaaaanyway feel free to draw over the picture with your ideas or whatever, it's up to you guys

Heh, awesome. But instead of boring rock, why not have a pile of broken Imass weapons? Stone swords, stone axes, stone-tipped spears, etc.

Looking good !

As far as Onrack and Trull, is Onrack slouched or sitting ? Trull seems to be sitting/leaning so perhaps you could "stand Onrack up" a bit to help fill space and vary the composition. I always imagine him and other Imass as immovable objects/ sentinels when in repose ( if you know what I mean). Only problem, as i've just realised, is that Edur are quite tall and Imass are short and squat, bollocks.

Moving on, that is Apsalar ! just gotta add the trimmings and stuff. Her face is perfect and the shoulder problem has gone. This one will be awesome when finished.

Guy on the left with a sword in his head needs a bit of work though :Oops:

if I could suggest something though, for Apsalar, try a reverse grip on the long knives

I was gonna suggest a reverse grip on just one of the knives. this is what i picture when SE describes anyone fighting with knives in the Malazan style.

Trull and Onrack look great though i agree with masan's saddle about the T'lann being more statue like when not moving. and your note on Trull havnig a scar is spot on. they even rubbed ash in the wound so maybe something tattoo like?

Trull and Onrack - Onrack is a bit spare - think of Neandertals relative to anatomically-modern humans - otherwise great, just widen Onrack out a lot and maybe turn his face towards the camera and give him an expression. Onrack was freed from the Vow and was a relatively adventurous T'lan Imass when he met Trull. Love your stuff as always :huh:

Quotes time! So these are all from the same continuous scene in HoC, around page 555 of the mmpb UK edition. And they are in chronological order for the scene, not sure what'll prove useful and what won't.

A harsh cry from the seneschal, and the flames rose into a wall on all sides, raging with unbridled power. Jorrude had laid open his left palm. Within the circle, a swirling wind rose, laden with the smells of a thaw - of spring in some northern clime.
Onrack turned to Trull. 'Now.'
The Tiste Edur slashed the obsidian blade across the edge of his left hand, then stared down disbelieving at the gash - clear, the flesh neatly parted, frighteningly deep.
The blood emerged a moment later, welling forth, red roots racng and branching down his grey-skinned forearm.
The gate seemed to tear itself open, surrounding the group within the circle. Spiralling tunnels reached outward from it, each seeming to lead on into eternity. A roar of chaos on the flanks, miasmic grey fire in the spaces between the portals. Onrack reached out to catch a reeling Trull Sengar. The blood was spraying out from his left hand, as if the Edur's entire body was being squeezed by some unseen, but unrelenting pressure.
Onrack glanced over - to see Monok Ochem standing along, head tilted back as the winds of Tellann whipped the silver-tipped fur around his unhelmed head. Beyond the bonecaster, a momentary glimpse of Ibra Gholan, Olar Shayn and Haran Epal vanishing down a tunnel of fire.
The seneschal's companions were now running towards their master's prone, unconscious body.

[...] Onrack presses palms with Edur and swear's himself to Trull (who can barely stand) [...]

Their hands still locked together, sealed for the moment by a slowing flow of blood, Onrack pulled Trull around until they faced one of the spiralling tunnels. Then they plunged forward.
Onrack saw the bonecaster wheel to face them. But the distance was too great, and the ritual had already begun tearing itself apart.
Then Monok Ochem veered into his Soletaken form. A blur, then a massive, hulking beast was thundering in pursuit.
Onrack sought to tear his grip from Trull to reach for his sword, to block the Soletaken and so ensure Trull's escape - but the Edur had turned, had seen, and would not let go. Instead, he pulled, hard. Onrack stumbled back.
Knuckles pounded on the ground - the ape that Monok Ochem had become was, despite being gaunt with death, enormous. Patched grey and black skin, tufts of silver-tipped black hair on the broad shoulders and the nape of the neck, a sunken-eyed, withered face, jaws stretching wide to reveal canines - voicing a deep, grating roar.
Then Monok Ochem simply vanished. Swallowed by a surge of chaos.
Onrack stumbled over something, crashed down onto hard-packed ground, gravel skidding under him. Beside him on his knees, was Trull Sengar.
The fall had broker their grip, and the Tiste Edur was staring down at his left hand - where only a thin, white scar remained.
A single sun blazed down on them, and Onrack knew they had returned to his native realm.


Having Monok in the back might not work, but I think you could pull off getting them just as they're emerging from the spiraling tunnel (before they stumble and fall on their faces of course).

And a bit of other descriptiveness to note: if you do want to go totally canon, Trull only has for weapons the obsidian knife from Onrack and a box containing Moranth munitions which has a strap and he slings it over a shoulder. Onrack has a stone sword, but is missing his left arm and is severely beaten up from fighting the Deragoth (big tooth marks on scalp, several ribs crushed).

With apsalar, why not try flipping the knives backwards....like she's holding them for a blade-punch. Might not look so awkward.

With Trull / onrack I noticed you had a "reposition" note above onrack. I agree it doesn't really work with him down low like that. It would help fill in the "problem area" you have noted for the large blank background above.

Maybe try with him standing up on the rock so his feet are more-or-less level with the rock that Trull is sitting on. Add wind whipping his hair around or something. Kinda like trull is taking a quick breather but onrack is still ready for shit to go down anytime.

Having an artistic level of stick figures...............
I'm gonna disagree about the Not Apsalar sketch, to me the shoulder detail just suggests motion.....she is moving fast and the cloak is billowing a bit.
Crokus, I always imagined as a young weedy runt who thickened out with all the Cutter knife practice etc.(the pose and expression is spot on )
Trull and Onrack is perfect.

Edit: Damn......note to self...read second page before posting.

Both Apsalar pics work for me.
The original T&O..........looked as if T was resting exhausted and O was guarding him with a slightly insane "you will have to go through me" expression.

I'll get me coat.......

am in awe.

Apsalar looks like she's running out of one of those anime movies where the ninja runs thru a crowd and then limbs just fall off everyone a minute later. Telorast and curdle are perfect and so make the picture.

I like the Cutter pics - both of them. The first has a nice urban fantasy feel and the second captures a bit of the mischevous that he lost after the first book.

Trull and Onrack are shaping up awesome, tho i'd like to see Trull's face a wee bit more heroic, less savage. And no hair, the shorning removed all that. Oh, and big ears. :) But a slightly more heroic look to Trull would contrast nicely with the awesomely intimidating/sinster look on Onrack, whom we all know was a big softy.

I finally freed up some time do do a bit of work on the pic, mainly sorting out some issues with the composition and took the suggestions.

I've done a fair bit of work on trulls face he's got more or less the expression I was going for, I took the harshness from the race and added a bit of humor though he still doesn't look like what I imagine trull to look like, also anyone got any ideas on where he should be looking, such a small design decision and it's changing the whole picture every time I move them.
I think adding imass weapons jutting out of the stones and such is an awesome idea that's totally going in.
I'm a bit stuck on what Trull should be wearin'I would say he lost his edur clothes at the shorning, and when I think of him now I imagine him dressed like he just pillaged a pirates wardrobe, any thoughts?
(this is the closest I've ever come to what I think trull looks like)

@d'rek- bugger I forgot about the knife and munitions I think those details are really gonna pull the costume together, though I think the spear is good for composition as a framing object, also I would lose onracks left arm but I would have to flip him horizontally and I'm not sure if it would work with him facing the other way.
I'm sure you guys noticed I sorted the background out too.....by destroying it mwahahahahahaaa, yeah I totally took the easy way out and just cropped the picture I been doing some commission work (which why I've been so tied up) and I'm not so anal about keeping the canvas A4
I'm pretty sure Onrack's design will kinda work itself out with this equation, caveman + TP + evil dead = Onrack
any other suggestions you have for the pic drop 'em in, and here's a whiskeyjack I did earlier

Man, I love that Whiskeyjack piece! The colours are great and the armour is awesome:)



As for Trull, I dunno. I imagine he wear bits and pieces of things, furs and leathers and stuff, I guess.

The Onrack and Trull pic looks pretty good, I like the way Trull stares right at me:)
