What the hell just happened?

Ok, so this might have been asked already in a previous post so I'm sorry that it is being rehashed. But anyway I just wanted to know what the hell happened when the meteor shower or maelstrom or whatever you want to call it occured. I mean all of a sudden this huge storm hits, heborics body gets thrown overboard and his body starts glowing, paran talks to hood and makes some sort of deal to save everybody but i don't know exactly what hood did. Also dragons appear over a couple of ships. And then there is a green dome with jade hands over ottaral island. Also I just want to say the I have yet to finish the book so if it gets explained I sorry to waste your guys time but I read this part and just got seriously frustrated with how confusing it was. So if someone good give me a summary of exactly what happened and why that would be much appreciated.

Heboric was returning to O-island to get rif of the green orange stuff inside him. His body falls over board in the storm.
Paran see's the threat and tries to reach Mael but instead gets Hood. Hood being in the know about Heboric, him being dead and all, accepts a deal with Paran (what Hood got out of it is still a mystery). Heborics soul is returned. Heboric has apparently come close enough to O-island that he activates some weird magical trigger and the meteors are mostly deflected or destroyed.
Spite had turned into a dragon to drag the ship, not to protect it... I think. Pusts mule was the one that saved the ship, since it apparently made some kind of super powerfull mule shield to protect them.
The Mules of Darkness are truly powerfull.

In a nutshell...
Jade chunks, big frikkin huge ones loaded with nasty power, that will impact like magic nukes, are falling. The 14th fleet is directly in the impact zone. So is the Host on 7C. So are Cutter and co in their boat on the way to return Heboric's body to the Jade finger on Otataral Island. So are Pust, Mappo and Spite on their way to wherever they were going. Spite knows 'something' is about to happen - she was already looking for Cutter's ship, it seems.
Everyone looks up... reallizes SOMETHING AWFUL is about to happen. Small chunks start falling, Cutter's ship is struck, Heboric's body is knocked overboard. Chaur goes after it. Bara goes after Chaur.
Paran in his MoD capacity tries to summon Mael, figuring the God of the Sea can do something about this, but he is tripped by the artist and end up at Hood's gate instead. Hood says he can help, but he wants something. They negotiate. QB overhears. We don't. Fans call SE many rude names.
Hood returns Heboric's soul to his body in some fashion. Heboric, back in HoC, figured out that the Jade chunks are powered by, and loaded with, souls. Souls are a Sheild Anvil's job, so he switchs from being Trake's Destraint to being Trake's Sheild Anvil, then using his link to the Jade power, he takes the souls in the Jade chunks into himself. Fans take back everything nasty they said about SE.
Spite spots Cutter's ship going down, veers into dragon form and drags her ship to where Cutter and co are recovered. Heboric's body sinks.
The whole 'green hands reaching' vision thing was an expression of the souls seeking salvation in Heboric's 'embrace' from their prison in the chunks, completely overlooking that this means hanging out in some dude's rotting body at the bottom of the ocean rather than re-enacting the role of the meteor in a Bruckheimer movie.
Without the souls to power them, the Jade chunks break up. Small pieces still hit Spite but she's an a-hole so no one cares. Bara saves Chaur and they have a good, manly, cry. Cutter whines about something or other. Then him and Scillara make 'we just almost died' monkey sex. Pust realizes his Mule saved them all and makes out with it. Mule of Shadow theorists take notes.
- Abyss, ...And now you're up to date.

Thank you very much guys that helps out alot. I just have one more question. Is it explain as to why the meteor shower occured at all in the first place or was it just one of those things SE does....stuff just happens. If it is explained later in the book then you don't have to tell me just tell me to keep reading.

I don't think it's ever stated outright, but there is a clear connection between the Crippled God and the Jadestatues. They are falling througha great tear, looking for a fallen god that came from their homeworld, etc. etc.
The real question is whether they are loyal followers of the CG or they are a kind of army sent to kill him.

Apt, where is this connection mentioned ? I'm not questioning you here, its just this CG/ jade statue thing has always befuddled me slightly.....

Bloody jade statues !
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.

Here's the quote, from Heboric's durhang-induced hallucinations in HoC:
HoC Tor MMPB p589 said:
A vast--impossibly vast--red-limned wound cut across the blackness, suppurating flames along its ragged edges. Grey storms of chaos spiralled out in lancing tendrils.
And the giants descended into its maw. One after another. To vanish. Revelation filled his mind.
Thus, the Crippled God was brought down to our world. Through this...this terrible puncture. And these giants...follow. Like an army behind its commander.
Or an army in pursuit.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Aha !
Cheers SMZ.
Or were they just sucked through the rent and not necessarily following the CG, as they contain souls is it feasible that the CG may be Hood's equivalent in whatever realm he came from ?
Just a thought.

Could be....There are various different hints of what he might have been on his home planet. However that really doesn't matter that much as he has been in pain for so long that he might not even remember what he was God of originally.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

Yes, it was basically armaggeddon -- the 11th hour -- however it was averted by all the above-mentioned players, through (and including) Heboric. The Jade Statues were vessels filled with sould of people from other worlds (realms? warrens?) that were drawn towards the Crippled God, as I think they were enslaved within them by his power to begin with ....
Should the statues have impacted on erm... Malazan-Earth... it would have blown the place to bits. Killed Bern I believe it is mentioned somewhere... as they are alien and cannot function in Malaz-world... basically act like nukes and a-bomb the place to dusty ashes.
It also raises the theory of how otataral is formed (from the statues impacting on Otataral Island, with some special material, or only coming halfway into this plane -- I forget).
It also raises the theory of alien worlds... numerous, in fact... and more importantly, that the warrens are not ephemeral warrens of magic as one might tend to think, but each one is an aliens world; the opening of passages to the warrens becomes simply an act of opening a gateway to them. ..... That's the impression I got from that part of the book anyway. It's been a while since I read that one
The meteor part didn't make ANY sense to me at first, until I finished the book then it kinda "clicked".

Well, firstly, I think he's too insane to do the job properly, and secondly, the pantheon wouldn't let him, so I seriously doubt it'll happen.

Just wanted to further add that the quote Apt gave is (and has been) quite debatable, as not only is Heboric very, very high right then, but there's also the issue of how in the hell Heboric would know such a thing so determinedly. There are far more statues in that dream-place than appear in the Malaziworld, and the souls within the one Heboric enters are from different worlds, some of whom profess to having no gods, and they have no idea where they are going.
As Paran has demonstrated time and again, characters can sound cocksure of themselves and still be wrong. So, it is debatable and we'll find it all out eventually in the last couple books.

Just a thought but does anyone think that perhaps all of those souls trapped in the jade statues could be the souls that Kallor blasted into oblivion and that the CG and Kallor have found a way to use them in the battle to come? What say you.

Adding onto my previous post perhaps this is why the unbound 7 took out Heboric when coming for Felesin Younger. Perhaps they were trying to take out one of the biggest threats to the CG. Crazy theory and don't know if it has already been mentioned but there you have it.

The Chained Bloke has a lot of pain. He needs a shield anvil. Too much for a mortal to dissolve, but if Heboric is not in a mortal body and could be the case as we lack any evidence of him doing anything other than thinking, even in Toll the Hounds, old Heboric could be "ephemeral" in his present state.
One thing is for certain. The Jade Souls are the series biggest mystrery we're all dying to know about.
