Deadhouse Gates and Night of Knives spoilers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Ok, doing my first re-read (Its amazing how much you dont get the first time). I had a question and the search function failed me.

In DG after Baudin, Felisin, Heb and Kulp jump from the Silanda and end up in Raraku Baudin tells them who he really is and explains about the Talons and why he's there with Felisin and says something about his father.

pp.394 mmpb
"I was born into it. There's a handful left, kicking around here or there, either old or drooling or both. A few first sons inherited...the secret. Dancers not dead. He ascended, alongside Kellanved-my father was there to see it, in Malaz City, the night of the shadow moon."

So I'm thinking his father is Trenech possibly?

And if he is, then its possible he was there on orders from Dancer for some reason?

If this has already been discussed just direct me to the thread. Thanks.

It's a good theory, and probable. The only problem I see is why Trenech? Nothing screams "Baudin's father" other than that quote - it could've very well been any of the other Talons we see make it out alive.

Also, I wouldn't know if this has been discussed already. Perusing the NoK forum for a little bit didn't turn up any results, but I might've missed something.

Because if it was one of the others it would be a boring theory! ;)

Plus he said he was "there to see it"

So. True. Which is why I love Erikson's writing ;)

As to your question ... no clue. I was wondering the same myself. I assumed that it would be unveiled later in the series... but now that I think of it, if it ties into Esslemont's half of the storyline, then it likely will not. Hrm... I'll have to read those even if just to get some background on the Book of the Fallen series :p

I wouldn't count on it. Baudin's father is also named Baudin...

'The Talons have found support among the nobility?' Pearl asked, a sheen of sweat now visible on his high brow.
The Adjunct's shrug was almost indifferent. 'Does that surprise you?'
Gamet could almost see the Claw's thoughts racing. Racing on, and on, his expression growing ever more astonished and… dismayed. 'Name him,' he said.
'Baudin.'
'He was assassinated in Quon—'
'The father was. Not the son.'
Pearl suddenly began pacing in the small chamber. 'And this son, how much like the bastard who spawned him? Baudin Elder left Claw corpses scattered in alleys throughout the city. The hunt lasted four entire nights…'
'I had reason to believe,' Tavore said,'that he was worthy of his father's name.'

The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Yup, gotta go with Ozy on this one, Baudin's dad is indeed also named Baudin. Based on NoK, Baudin Elder was probably one of the

, many (if not all) of whom were Talons. They had plenty of clashes with the Claws that night, enough for Baudin Elder's reputation.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.
