Anybody else cycle to school or work? How far? What kind of bike do you ride and why?
I started a bit last year but this year (provided weather cooperates) I plan to do it every day starting in June. May is my warmup month since I have a hard time doing it every day right off the bat.
My bike ride is 15km one way going from city to rural road with some walking trail in there for good measure, small hills and long flats.
I ride a Specialized Sport Triple

for commuting but my buddy is putting me together a sweet hard-tail mountain bike for trail riding out of spare parts.
I'm loving it so far. It's a hard old bike and 15k is a long way to go first thing in the morning, but I feel good all day as a result and sleep like a wee baby at night.

work is 70 mile saway so no, I don't cycle to work.
I do a lot of random cycling though because I put the earphones in and enjoy it.
No fancy customised ride for me just a basic raliegh mountain bike:

theres a hilly route I do, about 5/6 miles roundtrip, it does make you feel great and thoroughly recommend it, but not in the rain, Macros has no mudgaruds

You make the most random of threads Beerparty.
I have an old rusty women's bicycle I found on a lawn, probably stolen some time in the last millenia, now it's mine. I bike to and from the Uni. Probably a good 10 km both ways.
It was better back when I still lived close to the Uni. Old bicycles and winter season is no fun.

I used to ride garage-sale bikes as a student. I'd pick up a shitty old steel frame road bike, slap 50 bucks worth of replacement parts on it to make it rideable and use it for a season. At the end of the season I'd hand it off to some hobo who'd be grateful to have it.
Last year though, I couldn't stand it anymore so I picked up the specialized. Having a lightweight bike is fucking awesome for speed and hill climbs. The only problem is that if my destination is in town have to carry the extra 7 lbs in my heavy-duty bike lock. Fredericton, despite its small size, is terrible for bike thievery.
My bike type is cycle-cross, which I hear is some kind of racing event involving some light trail riding and road. Basically its a road bike with marginally thicker tires and a heavier duty frame, plus gearsets somewhere between a road bike and a mountain bike. Basically the perfect commuter bike. You can plough through broken glass, gravel trails, even some light-duty single-track if you're careful.

If I get the job relatively close to where I live, i'll be biking this summer.
2 days ago was the first time I got on a bike in 4-5 years (haven't used it since I went to Uni), and I biked to my soccer game (a good 8 k one way) yesterday.
I estimate that it'd take me about 20-25 mins to get to work on a bike, it's an option i'm seriously considering.
I've got a Jeep cherokee, I believe it's called.
I know next to nothing about bikes, aside from the obvious (i.e, how a bike works
