First art post here. Joined the forum today, so let's see if I get this thing working properly.

I had this idea when reading GotM that I should draw each characters portrait so I can keep track and remember them more easily. I'm now in the middle of reading MT and have since realized the sheer vastness of the task so I gave it up. Only managed to draw a couple of characters anyway. Here's Fiddler and Hedge pretty close to how I pictured them.

Always figured these two as kind of british working class football hooligan types. Funny how Hedge ended up looking a bit like Steve Coogan. I realized only after drawing and coloring the buggers that the helmets lack the half visor that is kind of a trademark of the Malazan Marine. Oh well, maybe I'll right the wrong someday, just not today.

I think Hedge is spot on :D Fid has less of the Fid-vibe one would expect, BUT still very good, give us more, and welcome to the forums :D

First off, they look pretty damn awesome. I've seen professional work that looks far worse, and if you are a professional, I've seen far worse work than that.

Second, when you get to Rake, I'm going to have to request you do two versions: one being the traditional longhaired version, the other in possession of an afro to rival the gods themselves. I'm sort of trying to get people to draw the entire important Malazan cast with afros.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

While I think is well done. It is, very cool portraits, some of the best I've seen... but I think we've only ever heard of Hedge using a leather cap. He uses it to conceal the flash burns and scars from clay fragments.

Likewise, maybe this is only after Fiddler becomes strings, but I mostly picture Fid with a scraggly red full beard.

Also I doubt those two sappers have ever used any kind of standard infantry armor like you're showing them here. They look way too uniform and clean. They should be wearing an assorted mix of scavenged armor in greater or minor disrepair.Yes, yes I know they're not actually more than heads and pauldrons in the above pictures... but you get my drift.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

Thank you all for the feedback you've given. It's much appreciated.

Seems like everyone seems to like Hedge so far and Fiddler not that much. I have to agree on that part myself. I did these sometime last december and hadn't read that far on the books themselves, so a lot of my vision for Fiddler has come to me only after doing these sketches. I realized soon after coloring them that Fid was actually supposed to have a red beard(with grey streaks as Strings). I actually didn't like Fiddler as a character that much at first but I've grown to love him and he's one of my favorites now. Should probably do another portrait of him.

As for the armour, I didn't really give much thought to it. For these portraits I figured they had kinda similar gear to the ancient Romans. Some of the armoury of the Malazan infantry still eludes me, but so far I've gathered they wear boiled studded leather armour as a base, with the magenta uniform on top of that, and metal bands similar to roman legionnaires covering their shoulders and hips. I think in tHoC the heavy infantry was described of having metal scale armour on top of these as well.

ps. I'm not sure if the world is yet ready for Anomandaris Irake with a fro. I think the universe might implode or something. :D

I have always pictured Fiddler looking abit wiser than this particular portait of him looking like your average warhappy grunt.

Malazan Sappers can best be described as "Hobos with explosives".

Hedge's face and expression are pretty damn good though, he always was the optimistic one of the two, whilst Fiddler was rarely that happy.
