I'm not sure if this has been discussed before or if it was ever mentioned in the book. I understand that Draconus made Dragnipur to help keep the hold of Darkness from being caught or overrun by chaos (or something like that, if I'm off let me know). And then Draconus used it as a way to escape the curse that Kallor laid upon him. Why was Draconus the one charged with protecting this gate or hold. From what I know of him he is an elder god and draconic which should mean he is from Starvald Demelain, right?

(random thought as I finish up. If for some reason he originally from Kurald Galain, could he be one of the first children of Mother Dark that Osserc mentioned to L'oric?)
So, you're the historian who survived the Chain of Dogs.
Actually, I didn't.

It seems you stand alone.
It was ever thus.

As per Feather Witch's freaky Hold reading back in Midnight Tides, Draconus is the Liege of the Hold of Dragons -- he's also referred to as "Tiam's kin" by Kallor in the MoI prologue (and his daughters Spite and Envy appear to hold the positions of Lady and Sister), so his connection with Tiam is pretty well established.

I doubt he's originally from KG, if only because the Elder Gods thus far appear to be those "native" to Wu, like K'rul, whereas gods like MD are unquestionably old, but seem to come from another dimension and as such are sort of immigrants. However, there's a certain conjoining of the native gods and the foreign -- Starvald Demlain and I believe KG are both somewhat a part of K'rul's "body", making him in effect a sort of link between Wu and the non-native mystical influences. Like a prism breaks up solid light, maybe. It might very well be that Draconus -- and by extension, Sister of Cold Nights -- is also a kind of bridging-deity; he with more affinity to SD, and she with more affinity to KG (her warren was assumed to be Rashan while she was in human guise, and the whole Night nomenclature), and K'rul in the middle. Admittedly SoCN is a bit of a stretch there, since her aspect was not very well-defined at all (I swear Kallor actually does everything he can NOT to reveal anything about it), but hey.

Now, as to why it was Draconus who had to protect the gate of Darkness, that's hard to tell. If SoCN was the more Dark-aspected she'd have made more sense -- but by the time of the MoI prologue she'd already been pretending to be mortal for some time, and then Kallor cursed her to be torn apart, which I suppose would have made giving her the responsibility impractical. In the same prologue Draconus says he's been forging the sword since "the time of All Darkness", whatever that is, so it does seem like something he took upon himself -- much like K'rul just decided to swallow Kallor's destruction to save Wu from the scars. Maybe he was just the one with the foresight and the skill to pull it off. And SD was, perhaps, sealed by this point, whereas KG was vulnerable.

Spoiler

Mod edit, because that bit of information comes from the RotCG prologue.

There is a pretty good reason as for why Draconus created Dragnipur which he explains in TtH. If you havn't read yet put really desperatly want to know just ask about in Toll the Hounds forum.

(Gah, sorry mods. I admit I was thinking more about what could be implied by an extremely literal extrapolation of Nightchill's original name . . .)
