When did Heboric go blind?

Something I must have missed: I am at p595 now, Felisin, Heboric and Kulp are with the mercgant in the desert, and since the last chapter, it was mentioned that Heboric is blind. I think I missed this: he wasn't blind when the book started, right? When and how did he go blind? Can you help me out? Thanks a lot!

As far as I remember...
He goes blind in the desert. His eyes get all sandy and gummed up, and they don't have any water. As they close, he starts to get more visions.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Yeah, I remember being slightly confused about this, even on the reread. The transition was just poorly done.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Ok, thanks to you guys! I wanted to look for myself, but I didn't know where to start. I'll check the chapters in the desert! Thanks again.

I just reread it a few weeks back, don't have it on me..but I believe he goes blind when he touches the statue.
Then he has "other" senses.
Then he has "other" senses.

Well, he may not be entirely blind - in House of Chains, he mentions having some blurry peripheral vision (when Felisin Younger visits him and when Silgar draws the image in the sand).
I bet it is cataracts or something like that though.

I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

He still has sight shortly after this when they meet up with Kulp and later when they're on the Silanda, so it's probably not this.
After they fall off the Silanda and are trudging towards Raraku is when he starts having visions, but I think he still has some sight, at least at the start of that part of the trek. When they climb down the cliff wall in the sandstorm, though, he is blind by that point as he uses his ghost hands (can only use them once he can't see). Come to think of it, he uses his hands to throw Kulp in the cavern as well, so it's between falling off the Silanda and that.

Yep, Heboric goes blind once he, Felisin and Kulp run into the Whirlwind. It's from all the sandy grit in the storm and dehydration. It's not true blindness - basically, his eyelids puff up so much that he can hardly open up his eyes any more.
