It's more of a symbolic thing SB, it's a small urn containing the ashes of burnt bales ( the little bits of wood on the top of cricket stumps) England have been playing Australia for them for well over 100 years i think, maybe Hinter or Brood knows the exact no of years ?

That's the England skipper holding them and today, yes, he is a giant striding the land, squashing koalas underfoot.

It started in 1882 I believe, although I think the Ashes themselves relate to an earlier game, the first time Australia beat England.

Oh and WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The aussies beat england at lords, something which they thought would never happen, so yes, they then burned the bails to represent the death of english cricket. There's some writing on the urn, if someone with proper internet wants to look it up :p and yes, it's only a few inches tall, but one of the most important trophies england contest in any sport.

And best of all, only two teams compete for it, so we actually sometimes have a chance of winning! :p

Isnt it that noones completely sure it's the ashes of the bails? One of the rumours is it's a veil, iirc.

Fixed :p

As mentioned above, in 1882 at The Oval Australia beat England for the first time, leading to a newspaper (The Times?) publishing an obituary regarding the death of English cricket, quoting "...the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia...". When England travelled to Australia for the re-match a bunch of Aussie women presented the England captain with a small urn containing ashes. There is much speculation as to what the ashes actually are (could be bails, could be a veil or could be the remains of an Aboriginal australian according to some), but at the moment who cares - WE HAVE REGAINED THEM!!!

Well done England deserving victory.

I'd like to say that man of the series definately goes to Strauss for cementing every successful english batting innings with a ridiculous number of runs and the uncanny ability to win 4 out of 5 coin tosses. Any critics must surely now be answered.

All I can say is bring on 10/11 series for another 5-0 whitewash :p

No, I meant ancestor, silly me.

You know, English overconfidence has buried you before...

And enjoy your victory while you can. Like all English victories, they're short lived. :p
