Kruger National Park - Tourists watched in tears as an elephant bull bade farewell to its "friend", the deceased bull Alexander.

When it could not lift Alexander, it went and sat down on top of him. It even urinated on him.

That's... different.

Excluding the tusks, an Elephant has 8 teeth in its’ mouth, 4 molars on the top and 4 on the bottom. They eat on average 18 hours a day so eventually the teeth start cracking and fall out. A new set of teeth will then replace the old set. An Elephant goes through 6 sets of teeth in a lifetime and at the age of about 47 years the last set will push through. Once the last set of teeth have fallen out Elephant starts rubbing the vegetation between its’ gums to try break it down. The condition of the animal deteriorates as it can’t chew its’ food properly to get enough nutrition and eventually dies.
SO...
The age will vary from one area to the next. In South Africa they normally reach 60-65 years. In Kenya & Tanzania about 70-75 years. The world record oldest Elephant reached an age of 86 years.
The reason why there is such an age difference in the different countries is due to the type of vegetation that the Elephants are eating. The softer the vegetation is, the longer the lifespan of the animal.

Ah, the pathos...poor dumb animal doesn't realise it's friend is dead, with all these touching attempts to make him rise. Poor thing.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

Apt is sad now. But I don't know why it comes as such a surprise must all animals act like that, they have as hard a time understanding death as we do, they just don't have the time to grieve for long.

I remember after one of our dogs died, the other one would come back to the place where we burried the old one and it slepped in the basket that the old dog used for a while, even though she didn't really fit in it

I believe it's about 100years. Very old anyways, older than mankind.

Being the animal expert that I am after having watched way too much animal planet, I agree with dkt's source. Elephants live about as long as a human being. Somewhere around 60, perhaps 70 is their max. Of course if we're talking living standards of some african nations, then Elephants live much longer than human beings :)

hm.. weird. Of course, I did get that knowledge from the printing on a cookie wrapper for children, so it's not really a scientific source or anything, but whatever :(

It's an article, not a video RLY. Don't fear the clicky.

So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."

I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

You'd be a hell of a lot cooler if you were a zombie, RLY. FYI.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Just read this thread and it reminded me of a vid I watched a few months ago. Not sure where I first got the link to it. Possibly from here.

This is just one example of the vid and has Jeremy Irons narrating. Best of the lot imo.

Just ignore the brutal slaying at the start. =/ It's all about teh love.

Ah, that reminded me of that dog (I think it was) who looked after 3 snow leopard cubs.
