HALP! need Excel advice.

can anyone explain to me how to transform numbers in excel?

I have a 16 by 16 matrix, and i need to get a sum of all the numbers, with each number being multiplied by its log 2.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I know how to do sums
the problem is, i need to convert ALL the numbers into a multiple of a number with that number's log...

basically apply the following formula:



where nij is each number inthe matrix and ni is the row sum

I worked out the denominator part, but numerator requires multiple transformations of all 64 numbers.

hah, i seem to have figured it out... the things we must learn for the sake of success in education..

now, just to flter out the messed up data that results from taking a log of 0....

The way I'd do it would be to create a second 16x16 matrix which displays the value of nlogn, and then sum those.

So would the new matrix...and I'm assuming that a new matrix will be created, where each entry is the product of wat? I'm still a little confused by this, but I'm damned if I'm going to walk away from a maths problem...

Would it be an idea to practice with a 4x4 matrix and then develop it up? from there.

problem has been solved.

to clarify for frook

I had a frequency martix.

essentially, I needed to calculate redundancy.

to do so, you divide the actual redundancy by the maximum redundancy.

actual redundancy = sigma n times n log 2, where n represents a number in every cell of the matrix.

what I was having trouble with was not performing a single transformation, but extending it so that I cover the entire matrix and don't have to calculate each number separately.
basically due to my noobness in Excel I didn't know about the dragging feature. but once you do the f(x) = PRODUCT (cell * LOG(cell, 2)) for the first cell of the matrix, you can drag the cursor so that the same formula's applied to all ajacent cells.

and that's how i learned to use excel, :ph34r:

lol!! You must have been looking at a lot of typing before you discovered that one. I don't know what I would do without the dragging feature!
