OK, I'm not just interested in dungeon crawls, but here's what I'm looking for:

A typical party-builder RPG. Preferably first-person, and with moderately limited graphics. Definitely needs to be freeware, as I'm broke. Basically looking for a solid, classic game available on abandonia or The Underdogs, something similar to Wizardry or FF1 but perhaps more polished.

Suggestions?

A good Final Fantasy 1 for PC download would be nice, if that's out there ...
I finally have an avatar ... and it's better than yours.

No idea if any of these are on Underdogs or abandonware but I suspect they all are.

You could try:
Eye of the Beholder 1 and 2, both great games. Number 2 especially so.
Might and Magic 1 through 5. Get 4 and 5 together (Clouds of Xeen, Darkside of Xeen) and they combine to form the World of Xeen which has more plots etc.
Betrayal at Krondor is another fine game from the era, even better if you enjoy Feists work, he had a hand in designing.

If you don't mind first person movement, and isometric turn based combat, i'd recommend the Gold Box games. I think there were about 9 of them, all Dungeons and Dragons based systems.
Pools of Radiance (the original) is probably the best of them, any RPG I play I compare to that and almost all fall short.

There was 3 sequels which you could import the characters from the previous games into and keep using.
Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades and Pools of Darkness. And some weird ass game called Hillsfar which fitted in their somehow.

Then there were 3 based off the Dragonlance novels,
Champions of Krynn, Death Knight of Krynn and Dark Queen of Krynn.

EDIT: Note all of these might need to run in Dosbox, especially to get sound going.

I'll second the Krynn trilogy and Betrayal at Krondor. I played all of em and had great fun with them too. I think many are available on Underdogs.

Gavin is correct, you will need dosbox to play em for sure...not a big deal, it's open source, has mouse support and works very well.

Actually, I'd say do BaK. It's a very solid game.

If you want to go a bit more modern try the Fallout series, Baldur's gate series, Icewind Dale series, Planescape torment. You might need to purchase those, but they're getting pretty dated now so I'm sure you could find them for not too much money or *free* someplace.

I would also say the Baldur's Gate stuff. I used to love to play that, having my computers networked, so that I could play with my friends too. I would always take the great loot, as party leader of course heh.

Another one that may qualify is Dungeon Siege. I really liked the first one, but never played 2.

I thought diablo always had a pretty good encryption on the disc...or maybe that was diablo 2.

I remember way back trying to find a working pirated No-CD version and it really just didn't exist.

But yeah. Even original Diablo rules. Rules to the max.
