Was Baudin actually seen or mentioned in TTH? Could be he died, was fired or he abdicated his position. Leaving the spot open for the 2nd

Yup, I believe towards the ending of the book that Hood mentions Baudin, it's just that I don't have my book with me at the moment and am unable to find the passage; Hood was providing his final directions to someone, was it the Segulah second? It occurred when Hood was already in Dragnipur.

He said something like "fetch me my Soldier the one once known as Baudin"

thats it exactly. seems as if they had somehow changed position. anyway, i like the second much better than baudin, so i favour him being knight and baudin being ordinary soldier.

I wonder why Hood decided to switch their positions?

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

Not to mention that I think Iskar Jarak got mentioned as Knight at some point too, maybe even Bruk as well. Weird that he not only flipped Baud/Seg2nd, but also had multiple Knights and only the one Soldier. I would've thought it'd be the other way around...

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

I think there's some talk about a hierarchy of ascendancy, with the King, Queen, and Knight being higher and the various consorts, masons, reavers, soldiers, magis, etc being lower. It may be that Baudin was really intended to be the soldier, not the knight of HH Death.

If I was an immortal jaghut and ruler of High house death....

-Knight would be more valued than soldier.
-I would pick the seguleh second as Knight and demote Baudin to Soldier. I would think that even Baudin would agree that the 2nd makes for a better knight.

If I was a sleeping goddess upon which all life exists and thus must remain unaligned...

I would give my power to a wild card ascendant who I viewed as someone that would ensure that life continued as I slept and that I would be able to survive until my awakening.

Sincerely,

I don't think Iskar Jarak got callled Knight. He was merely was put in charge of the army of Hood because the real Knight, Seguleh Second, was needed elsewhere, (and presuably beacause WJ was the best commander around)

Maybe. But as Urizen said he didn't have a real position in HHD(what's the sense of that anyway if Hood has decided to quit?) but was simply put in charge of the army of death because he was a good leader when he was alive and the same happened to others (Dujek, Brukalian,Bult). Also Hood made the Second go so someone had to guide the army.

It seems weird that Hood had every single army we heard about...the 7th, Onearm's Host...still, everybody goes through Hood's Gates sooner or later.

Well Quick Ben states in MoI that Fener once had a house in the Deck of Dragons and that Mortal Sword, Shield Anvil and Destraint where the names for the equivalent of Knight, soldier and priest but since that house no longer existed there hadn't been a real Mortal Sword/Knight in thousands of years and that the titles the Gray Swords used were probably just for show but this seems to be reconned with ever ascendant and his granny getting a Mortal Sword
