Yep. Will there ever be a better Doctor than Ten? I think not. Damn I wish he had done more seasons. But always leave 'em wanting more I guess...
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Indeed.

It's funny, but I grew up watching the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Doctor's...but Ten just steals my heart every time. I've re-watched many Ten eps many times and each one that I cherish never ceases to impress me.

And yeah that speech in WATERS OF MARS, plus his Time Lord Victorious speech to Adelaide at the end were both phenomenal.

Just want to add that I ADORE his speech to Wilf in THE END OF TIME P1...."I did some things, but it went wrong..." I react like Wilf every time "Oh my word..."

See, our earlier debate on Rose, where you quite fairly were able to pinpoint the relatively few episodes that I was basing a negative opinion on. I couldn't do that, because I've only seen it all once. So my opinion is based on a general feeling obtained from a single viewing. The actual details of what moments caused that feeling are irrelevant, because an opinion on a single viewing should be valid.

I WILL watch them again though, and it'll be interesting to see how my opinion changes.

Oh, and for the record, I hope she is in the anniversary one because I really liked 'Slightly Edgy Rose' on the moments you see her after she's moved to the other reality. Especially in Turn Left or whatever it was called.

Indeed, Post-Doomsday Rose is a broken, edgy woman. It gives her character a great urgency.

Because everyone knows that the best ep of DW ever is a toss up between BLINK and MIDNIGHT.

Nah, it's the Empty Child/Doctor Dances (I realise that's two episodes). But those two come in close behind.

Quote

Eleven has...none of that. Even in the rare cases it does show up, Smith I don't think conveys "barely restrained anger" or "seething rage" or even internal pain very well. He can do a very good "ouch that hurt" look, but he struggles with, dare I say it, making the bigger stuff subtle, and he doesn't express it forcefully enough to go closer to the route of Ten (which would alleviate some of the issues as well, though in a different way than may suit the overall character). In other words, he's stuck in a sort of acting middle-ground, that just doesn't work, imo.

See, I think the opposite, I reckon for the most part Smith does the anger-and-sadness-of-the-Doctor better than Tennant.
And I also think Smith has more range- specifically, Tennant is better when he's being REALLY LOUD, especially when it's happy-or-excited loud, where Smith has the tendency to get hysterical, and has the occasional great quiet moment (Rose leaving, for example), but the bits in the middle I prefer Smith's version.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

PG, I know you and I are mostly on opposite sides of the spectrum usually...but man what are you smoking? Tennant is 42 times the actor Smith is. Gah. That you even wrote those words down baffles me.

I suppose I could ask you the same thing. If I hadn't seen Tennant in other stuff than Who I would consider him a rather limited actor. When he's happy, well, to me it seems a bit forced, his sadness has always appeared fake and annoying to me. Not to mention his "anger" No, when 10 got angry it wasn't even the slightest bit intimidating. 11, while not really that intimidating either seems, to me, more real.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Tennant's run, it had some absolutely great episodes and Tennant did an okay job too, but Smith just seems more real to me.

I loved Eccleston's Doctor, to me he seemed like an alien who was continually "baffled" by other people. In a good way.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Strokes for folks I'm thinking, but nah, either way I definitely think you're being very harsh on Smith. I prefer him to Tennant but I don't think there's a huge difference either way in their talent overall...

Honestly though, 11 had me at 'Don't worry, I've commandeered a vehicle'. It's those passing moments I remember from Smith better than Tennant.

It's OK QT. We may be surrounded by very strange people here, but most of the Internet is on our side. Ten was enough to shaft Baker out of the #1 people's favourite Doctor, ffs. :p

It's official. Neil Gaiman is writing another ep of DW, the penultimate one for Series 7. Woohoo!

DOCTOR WHO written by my favourite author is like the finest crack cocaine to me.

Excellent.

And we already knew he was writing, but I'm very interested to see what Neil Cross has come up with. Completely different Genre but Luther is an excellent show (and hey, maybe he'll turn out to be so good that he'll become the next showrunner and persuade Idris Elba to be the Doctor...:))

On the other hand, two more Gatiss episodes. :)

My brain is locking up trying to visualize that.

Maybe they should get the actress who played Alice as the companion. :)

Oh, she was well written and developed. She was a decent person by the end. It just wasn't ever enough to make me really get attached to her. She took too long to be actually useful for my tastes as well, whereas Martha and Donna pitch in pretty quickly. Half a season of personal growth was too little for me to really get fond of a character who had pissed me off immensely for over a season.

I was fine when she was just with the Doctor to be honest, but every time they popped back and she treated Mickey like an obedient little lapdog I raged a bit.

I thought Moffet did RTD quite a service in the Vampires of Venice episode where he basically excuses Rose's behaviour by commenting on how time with the Doctor in the Tardis makes you disconnect from the real world.

Like I said, she does this no more than 3 times before realizing it. Mickey is treated poorly by her in ROSE, ALIENS IN LONDON and WORLD WAR THREE...the next ep he's in is BOOM TOWN and that is the one that gets down and dirty to deal with Rose's treatment of him, ending in him telling her he's not going to be treated that way anymore and makes her start to change her ways. When she next sees him in THE PARTING OF THE WAYS she's dealing with the fallout from him doing that, and he spends the whole ep basically telling her that she's been selfish to him and her mother. He is then in a further 10 episodes. 9 of which he is treated not only as an equal but a friend of both Rose and the Doctor. I fail to see how this turned you off her so much, since it was part of her character arc and Mickey ends up becoming one of the biggest heroes of the series as a result. He also finds his true love in Martha. It was layered in this way on purpose, but I don't feel it portrays Rose in any poorer a light...she's human and as a young girl she's less than a paragon of kindness...but the whole thing is about her growth. You seem to say you realized she was well-written, but then in the next sentence dismiss that growth in the writing because 3 episodes turned you off of her.

I get not liking her as a character, but your reasoning is less than sound IMNSHO.

I've rewatched it now

Firstly, I did notice more of what was good about her this time through, to the point that I realised my previous opinion of her being far less useful than later companions was incredibly harsh. I didn't really banish my demons about her treatment of Mickey though. Right, all the episodes you list above are in season 1. And it turned out that although they all grated, it was none of them that whacked the nail in the coffin and cemented my negative image of her. It was the end of School Reunion, when Sarah Jane had just declined the offer of traveling with them, and Mickey asks if he can join. The Doctor is ok with it, Sarah Jane thinks it's a great idea, but Rose looks utterly fucking pissed off about it.

That... that's the moment. Not the moment that I 'hated Rose' or anything. I don't. But the moment she never had a chance of being my favourite companion.

Neil Gaiman's ep (called THE LAST CYBERMEN) has shot, and the Cybermen themselves have been redesigned...looks like they might be the Mondasian ones...but at least the redesign maintains the flavour of what RTD did while making them new. I like them a lot!

The 8th Doctor (Paul McGann), up till now he's been relegated to the 1996 movie (which is better than people give it hassle for) and the Big Finish Audio Drama's (which are apparently quite good)...but the covers have always featured his 1996, foppish Doctor persona...and that never really fit with me as he never got a chance to do his own style....plus this is the Doctor incarnation that exists at the beginning and during the Time War (9 has regenerated recently enough in 2005 to comment on his own big ears in ROSE), so one would imagine a much bleaker persona for 8.

Well, last year he was given an OFFICIAL outfit and Sonic Screwdriver by the BBC, and his most recent audio drama DARK EYES has a cover that reflects that...and I find it just wonderful to finally see the 8th Doctor looking proper...plus I think Paul McGann is a stellar actor!

Check it out!
