I'm watching the first year's worth of Tennant Doctor with my cousins.

Two of the first three episodes are flat out badly written. I'm willing to keep going, but it's bad writing enough to dampen the enthusiasm of my ten year old cousin who is the driving force behind this slow progress through the seasons.

Why do people like this show so much?

You will need to either accept that DOCTOR WHO is not known for its writing....or abandon it as not for you.

DOCTOR WHO is campy, cheesy scifi. It has always been that, and always will be that. There is some gold writing in the show, but it's nuggets in the rough.

It is what it is. It's not my fave show because it's the best written show on tv. It's my fave show because the characters are compelling, the emotions are real, and the worldvuilding is over 50 years old.

For every THE WATERS OF MARS or BLINK, there are hokey episodes...but the hokey episodes are supposed to be FUN.

If you don't like it after 4 or 5 episodes. It's not for you.

If you're counting the Christmas Invasion as one of the three, then your next two are School Reunion and The Girl in the Fireplace. Those are really good (particularly the second), so stick with.

We've seen Series 1 from 05 and these Series 2 episodes.

Tooth and Claw and School Reunion are the stinkers. New Earth was goofy/creepy fun. The kung fu monks with a werewolf was set up to be goofy fun, but it fell apart and I didn't buy Victoria setting up Torchwood for those purposes. I know they were pushing Torchwood hard at this time, but it didn't fit. The Krillitane plot in School Reunion was... bad. We also didn't have the benefit of knowing Sarah Jane from before.

We didn't watch the Christmas Invasion. Will probably go back and see it. I think the episodes/writing pick up from here on in as I see Cybermen and planets orbiting black holes in the upcoming list.

Your aware that Sarah Jane was the companion of the 3rd and 4th Doctor yes?

I assume the reason we're not talking about the finale of this season is because it's so disappointing after the previous episode?

I mean, I actually rather like a lot of what it's trying to do, but the execution falls flat in many places and the very end is both a mess and a cop-out.

Honestly, I thought it was the best series finale we've had in many a year. Actually quite subtle and so much better for it. Clara's speech about her past was spot on the money and there were so many echoes of past episodes which show the Doctor has grown from Ten's "Time Lord Victorious" and that despite his rage in the past couple of episodes, Twelve is the better man.

Also, three cheers for the return of the Bad Wolf theme, one of my favourite pieces of Who music.

I liked it a lot actually. The opening standoff stuff was...eh....but the rest was damned fine.

Glad Rassilon got his due, though disappointed all those set visits I heard about, Tennant, Georgia Moffat, and Paul Mcgann turned out to be nothing. Would have loved to see some previous Docs I there...and Jenny cameo would have made PERFECT sense with what happened to Clara and Ashildr.

See, I thought the opposite. The opening standoff stuff was really good, but the rest was a contrived mess.


I actually rather like the idea of Clara and Ashildr having a Tardis (I've said this everywhere, but my Ashildr/Captain Jack spinoff is still possible!) but how they got there was just... not very well put together at all. Imo.

Ashildr is hands down THE WORST character the show has introduced ever in NuWho. The fact that she gets to go swanning off on adventures after being such a repugnant little shit for the whole season is my least favourite Moffat decision of his tenure. Full stop.

Not in the slightest. We knew she knew the Doctor from way back, but she didn't mean anything in particular to us until she had the bonding time with Rose in the lab.

There are going to be a lot of call backs that you might not understand then to Classic Who. RTD was a big fan of bringing back Classic Who villains, and characters, Sarah Jane and K-9 chief among them. Hell, Sarah Jane had a spinoff show until she passed away.

But yeah, a cursory perusal of some Classic Who story arcs on Wiki might not go amiss, since you never watched Classic Who.

I quite enjoyed that. A silly romp with a bit of heart to send River on her eventual way to the library. Nicely done, lost of funny bits and Rivers speech was great.

I'm conflicted really. It was pretty good fun and had some nice moments of emotion as well, but it requires River to (1) be an utter moron to not realise that he's the Doctor basically straight away and (2) forget that she spent most of her early appearances requiring the Doctor to do what she's now going to passionately declare that he would never do.


Moffatt doesn't really know how to handle River and hasn't for a while which is a shame because she's been such a fun character.

So the Moff's off: the next series will be his last.

It'll also be held till next year coz the BBC are a bit weird. Although it does give time for Chibnall to get set up.


I'm not sure about Chibnall, he's won a lot of accolades for his other work, none of which I've seen, but his episodes on Who so far have ranged from average to dismal. But hopefully he'll know how to structure a long-term plot better than Moffat.


Would be nice if he still pops back in for the occasional one-off story.
