My thought for Maisie Williams was Jenny as well (that's the Doctor's daughter, right? That's who I immediately thought of, and I feel like Maisie Williams would totally do that character justice!)

Regards that shot of Missy and Clara - I agree that they didn't look like they were antagonizing each other in that one shot in any way, so my guess is that Clara has to team up with Missy to save the Doctor from some kind of mortal peril!

My issue with Jenny is that she's fairly useless as a DW character. There are far stronger characters, with thicker backstories, from the Doctor's past that could be brought back in over someone like Jenny who was just crafted out of some of his DNA and was kind of clever. If that makes sense?

No, I understand your POV on it, and I don't completely disagree - I'm reading up about Susan, and she'd certainly be an interesting character to bring back into the Whoniverse, especially as Maisie Williams. Romana, I'd be less inclined to think that they'd bring someone who was suspected of being one of the Doctor's love interests in the body of an 18 year old girl, but who knows.

I thought Jenny was a very interesting character - you're right, she has a lot less backstory to her than Susan or Romana, but I feel that just means that it would give the writers more creative freedom. Jenny would be an interesting character to bring back because of her internal struggle between being a soldier and being a pacifist like The Doctor - especially given Capaldi's Doctor's aversion to soldiers. I think it could make for some very interesting dynamics between her and the Doctor.

RTD and Tennant were spotted in Cardiff, and then were spotted on set.

Rumour has it that this ties into Moffat's claim that the "reason Twelve chose Caecilius's face from S4 THE FIRES OF POMPEII" and that RTD and Tennant will shoot extra scenes with the Tenth Doctor during the FIRES OF POMPEII to show why Twelve eventually chooses that face for his Doctor.

No reason to have RTD there for that though, surely?

Moffat and RTD are very conscious of who shoots what and who is responsible for what. For example, the sequence after the Tenth Doctor Regenerates and becomes the Eleventh (the one in the exploding TARDIS at the end of END OF TIME P2) was overseen/done by Steven Moffat...even though it was in the tail end of RTD's final episode. RTD consiously made sure Moffat was in charge of the Eleventh Doctor from the get-go, even in an post-regen scene. So one would imagine that if new scenes are being shot with Tennant for a FIRES OF POMPEII, that RTD would be in charge of those scenes. It keeps an aesthetic between style and ideas. Beyond that the "reason for Twelve's Face being Caecilius's face" idea actually came from RTD....Moffat just phoned him and asked him what it was, and if they could do it. From a conception standpoint that's an extra layer of why RTD would be there.

I still have yet to watch Tennants last season. Who's Caecilius?

He's the Roman character that Peter Capaldi played in the Season 4 episode THE FIRES OF POMPEII. RTD and Moffat have stated that Twelve chose the face he chose for a reason...we don't know why yet.

I miss living in Cardiff. I saw them filming it a couple of times. Most notably the TV sucking your face off episode way back when. That was just round the corner from my house at the time.

Yeah their base is under the Millenium Centre down in Cardiff Bay (The Dr ends up there a couple of times too) didn't watch them filming that one though.

New Trailer!

Likes like all kinds of fun coming this season! Does the lion in the Maisie Williams scene tell us anything more about who she might be?

The lion thing immediately made me think of Survival (and brought a mild sense of dread to my mind as it was the last Dr Who when i was a kid) so maybe that?

But then again that was a dying planet so perhaps not.

Tangential:

This summer's Titan Comics DOCTOR WHO event is a 5 issue mini-series written by Paul Cornell (S1 Episode FATHER'S DAY), starring four Doctors! So it's Ten and his comics companion Gabby Gonzalez (Ten incarnation takes place after Donna, before his regeneration and THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR), Eleven and his comics companion Alice Obifune (Eleven incarnation takes place after Amy & Rory, but before Clara), Twelve and Clara (Takes place post Series 8, but before Series 9), and The War Doctor (in the midst of the Time War, prior to DAY OF THE DOCTOR).

Basically Paul has been given the chance to have these 4 Doctor's meet...creating the typical multi-Doctor Paradox/Fixed Point...and what did Paul invent when a paradox/Fixed Event gets screwed with? You got it, the Reapers from FATHER'S DAY are back (for those who don't recall, when Rose attempted to save her father's life in the past when he died she created a paradox and the Reapers showed up.) The end of that episode is very bittersweet, but packs an emotional punch...so I have high hopes for Cornell on this story.

A few notes: He's used a few too many Tenth Doctor tropes/buzzlines so far for my liking. I like when Comics incarnations of the Doctor can speak like the Doctor without feeling the need to fall back on buzzwords like Alons-y. But it's only with the Tenth Doctor, Eleven and Twelve were fine....though Twelve's narrative voice is a bit off (He calls Ten "sonny"?)...Cornell utterly nails Clara though, 100%. The story so far is really cool, though it's mostly table setting. Still worth a look if you dig comics and are willing to stay tuned for the next 4 weeks while the rest of the issues release.

So, a few nuggets of more interesting spottings have happened in Cardiff.

Georgia Moffett (AKA Jenny from Series 3 Ep "The Doctor's Daughter"...also real life daughter of 5th Doctor [Peter Davison] and real life wife to 10th Doctor [Tennant]) was spotted on set and a pic was snapped of her and Capaldi standing by the TARDIS console (Capaldi in costume)...this is either a set visit, or perhaps Jenny is making a reappearance.

More telling though is that 8th Doctor Paul McGann was spotted on set too...around the same time as Tennant and RTD. This tells me that SOMETHING is in the offing. These aren't just set visits...McGann's presence almost screams that something is afoot to me.

Rumour is that Eight and Ten will both feature in the Series 9 finale in some way, and that it will include Gallifrey as well.

Okay, so Jenna and Peter were filming the finale (two parter) for Series 9...and they filmed scenes at Eddie's Diner in Cardiff Bay, with Jenna in waitress garb.

What's the significance?

Well, Eddie's Diner is the Diner that featured in Series 6 opener THE IMPOSSIBLE ASTRONAUT, which ostensibly was in America (in the southwest) where Amy, Rory, River, and Eleven met (both older Eleven, and younger Eleven). It's a VERY distinctive set and not one they could easily pass off as anything but the same Diner in America.

So, this new info ties into the idea that previous Doctors will feature in the finale...the rumour being that Twelve is revisiting some of his old adventures (Eleven in THE IMPOSSIBLE ASTRONAUT, Ten in THE FIRES OF POMPEII, Eight in THE NIGHT OF THE DOCTOR) in his attempts to locate Gallifrey. Could it also be that the "reason he chose Caeciclius' face" mystery that they will be solving this season ties into that in as simple a way as a reminder? Like him revisting THE FIRES OF POMPEII to figure out why he chose that face is merely meant as a trigger to start him on his quest to find Gallifrey? So he also revisits an Eleven time period...and Eight right before he chooses to down the serum to allow him to regenerate into the War Doctor?

Speculation...but interesting as heck.

Remember also that the seer Lucius in FIRES OF POMPEII was able to see things beyond what should have been possible - Donna Noble having something on her back for instance..... so going to them for clues to Gallifrey MAY also be a possiblity.

According to two people who got to see the Edinburgh screening of THE MAGICIAN'S APPRENTICE last night.

We see Karn, Dorium's bar and the Shadow proclamation (I don't think that's too spoilery)

So (for those who may not recall) Karn is the Gallifrey-close planet where Eight Regenerated into The War Doctor (John Hurt)...which means that chalice that we see Twelve holding in the prequel minisode for Series 9 which was pointed out as the same prop that Eight drank from to Regen...may not just be a prop reuse by the BBC but a story point.

Nice also to see the Shadow Proclamation revisited...I always felt they were underused. They should have been like the Green Lantern Corps (Space Police), but RTD never really utilized them...maybe Moffat can?

Anyways, the word from them of the overall episode is that it's a great opener, with one of them claiming it's the best opener since REMEMBRANCE OF THE DALEKS...but I'd argue that the ep it has to beat for Openers would be THE ELEVENTH HOUR.

They also said it FEELS more like the opening to a finale two-parter than the beginning of the season...which sounds cool.

Only a couple more weeks people!

Woohoo!

River Song is meeting the Twelfth Doctor at Christmas!

I developed a dislike of River's story through S6 as she was focused on so incredibly much...up to and including making a piss poor choice in the wedding episode...but when she showed up later on (in THE ANGELS TAKE MANHATTAN and NAME OF THE DOCTOR) and her "mystery" was done with as a plot point I enjoyed her almost as much as I did during her first few eps with Tennant.

So the prospect of Kingston interacting/sparring with Capaldi excites me to no end!
