In my defense of THE MAJESTIC TALE (OF A MADMAN WITH A BOX) is a Series 6 variation on the I AM THE DOCTOR theme which is almost an elongated version...so it's technically still HIS theme...even if it wasn't the first incarnation of it. I don't think they play I AM THE DOCTOR after Series 5, all the latter instances of his theme are from MAJESTIC.

And I'm partial to it because the wedding party and my wife and I walked into our reception to the tune of THE MAJESTIC TALE (OF A MADMAN WITH A BOX).

While we are on ten topic:

Nine's Theme

Ten's Main Theme
Ten's Offshoot Latter Theme (series 3, 4, & Specials)

Eleven's Main Theme
Eleven's Offshoot Theme (Series 6 onwards)

I think we get the latter variations of the theme's because Murray Gold allows it to grow organically with the Doctor in question.

At any rate, I'll be sad if Gold ever leaves WHO, as his score is a MUCH bigger part of the show than it ever was in the past.

Regards the episode - like many have said, I'm terribly sick of the Daleks. I realize there's some contract somewhere that forces them to use the Daleks once a season at least (or at least I feel like I read that in here somewhere) but still, their episodes, though wildly varying in the how they get there, pretty much always end the same way.

That being said, there is lots in this episode that I thought was truly wonderful! As noted above, the moments where the Doctor's usual compassion about people dying just isn't there ("He's the top layer if you want to say a few words" had me in stitches) were great to watch. The slow fleshing out of Clara's relationship with this Doctor is good. When she was saying "That is NOT what we have learned!" I was seriously being all "You teach that Doctor, teacher!!"

Also, the call back Dalek line "You would have made a good Dalek." Say what you will about the Daleks, that's one of the most powerful lines in the series. I think the first time a Dalek says that in NewWho is in Eccleston's first Dalek episode, and it's an idea that has been touched on, but the fact that they overtly bring that specific line back was very neat. I think that it's an indication of what we should be expecting from this season's Doctor Who. We'll be exploring the Doctor's dark side, and just how dark his dark side can be.

I'm unsure how I feel about Pink the Soldier, yet. Obviously one of the overarching themes this season is going to be the Doctor's hate for soldiers, something that has always been evident in NewWho. I feel like event Tennant and Smith's Doctors hated soldiers (because GUNS!) but given that this Doctor is all about the darker side, we're going to be looking very closely at the things that the Doctor hates, and how the Doctor expresses that hate. I like that, I think it's going to make for excellent television, but Pink is a Chekhov's Gun, and I'm interested to see how, exactly, that gun is going to fire.

It seems obvious, to me, that Clara's gonna fall in love with him, the Doctor's going to continue being down on soldiers throughout the season, he's eventually going to come pick Clara up while she's with Pink, they're going to help the Doctor deal with something, the Doctor's going to get really buddy-buddy with Pink, but then find out that Pink is a soldier, and it's gonna cause all kinds of drama that'll force Clara to make the Doctor just deal with how he expresses his hate... I'll be interested to see if they go somewhere different with that, and how Pink is going to tie into the rest of the overarching plot.

Danny is a major character this series, so I can fully see him being Rory....but instead of the Doctor feeling he's a decent-if-clueless fellow who is along for the ride...we will get the soldier who's past will come out eventually (including whatever innocent person he killed as referenced in this ep) and the Doctor will be at proper odds with him....but it's probably all to do with the Doctor facing his past as The War Doctor and getting back to Gallifrey.

Not sure i'm liking the new variation on the theme tune.

It lacks 'power' to me - its evidently the same tune, but just feels like its missing a large part of itself.

In my defence against your defence, The Madman With a Box and The Majestic Tale (of a Madman with a Box) are two different tracks (the former much harder to find on youtube, but it's on Spotify), so I can see where we were getting our wires crossed.

I'd be sad, but then, Doctor Who is all about change, and I'd also be pretty interested to see what any new guy will bring. At the moment he's more of a fixture than possibly anyone else in the show's history, which is odd for Doctor Who - although he does evolve constantly so it's not jarring.

Agreed. The weight this track carries for me is an emotional tonne. The Doctor, trying to relate and save the only person of his species left...even if he's bad...he's his only family left....it's competely gutting. That track always reminds me of that. Which I suppose is the point. But yeah, good call.

I'm currently watching The Name of the Doctor, aka last episode of season 7. When the Doctor and Clara first show up on Trenzalore, and they're talking about gravestones.....

Clara: The gravestones are a bit basic.
Doctor: It's a battlefield graveyard, my final battle.
Clara: Why are some of them bigger?
Doctor: They're soldiers. Bigger the gravestone, higher the rank.


And then there's discussion about how the Tardis is the biggest gravestone cause it's huge.

Just pointing this out because of what I feel is the obvious connection to the whole Capaldi Doctor's aversion to Soldiers. I think it means he is ashamed of his previous incarnation's "soldierhood"

It's clear Missy is screwing with the doctor and that is why he was so bamboozled in this episode, Still, I wish that they were simultaneously more transparent about it (rather than have the doctor stumbling around confused for no apparent reason) and more subtle with it (another set of robots going to "The Promised Land"? Really?

I liked the ep, but Robin Hood acted WAY more like the heric Doctor than the Doctor did in my eyes. Capaldi is a GREAT actor, but so far he's not even a SHADE of the Doctor in my books. I hate to sayy that...but as much of a Tennant Fanboy I was, Matt Smith sold me on his FIRST episode. Capaldi hasn't sold me in THREE eps yet.

That's a big thing to me. And that's not a good thing.

I'll never stop watching Doctor Who, but so far Capaldi era is REALLY MEH!

I liked ep 1. He did a good job of getting his sea legs. I didn't much care for the storyline but it was at least an average rating for me. The banter with an edge between Clara and the Doctor when they thought the other one had placed the add was good.

I very liked ep 2. The sarcasm laced one liners were great, plot was solid, other actors good. A slightly above average rating from me for that one.

This episode? I was going along with it just fine. The spoon was absurd in an amusing way. It all came crashing when he did the "Karate kid does booty dance shove". The Merry Men were absurdly stupid, which apparently infected the Doctor. By the dungeon bantering I was seriously considering switching to something better. Agents of Shield ep 3 or 4 maybe.

And 3 episodes of robots?
