Cool deal. Now I just gotta to see if my boy can understand the new Dr. He's 7 and loved Smith so he won't understand regens.

I was around 5 when Tom Baker (4th Doctor) regenerated into the 5th (Peter Davison)...it was weird and I didn't QUITE understand it...but I basically just kept watching anyways. This according to my mother to whom I asked the question to when it happened.

So I've been rewatching the whole series working up to the new season start this weekend, and I noticed something that I thought was kind of funny.

In the Series 1 episode where they're on Satellite 5 for the first time, in the background there's a news announcer saying that the Face of Boe is pregnant for little Boeinas.... That means that Jack Harkness was preggers!

Indeed. There are a bunch of little nuggets throughout the series during RTD's time that are subtle nods to worldbuilding like that. Moffat does it too, but he's more blatant.

I think my favorite is the fact that The Medusa Cascade and The Shadow Proclamation are mentioned a bunch of times in random dialogue from Series 1 onwards and aren't actually revealed/a part of the narrative till the end of Series 4. It's something you really only notice upon a re-watch...I think Nine mentions it first in the Slitheen episode?

I'm currently about to start the 2-part finale for Series 4, and honestly, I didn't realize that the Medusa Cascade was ever mentioned before Season 4, except for maybe once in passing. They sure as heck pepper it all throughout season 4, though.

The Medusa Cascade was iirc first mentioned by the Master in Series 3. The Shadow Proclamation was first mentioned in the very first episode by Ecclescake. But that turned out to be a bit rubbish...

I don't know that I'd call it rubbish. Just that A Time Lord considered himself above them when he was finally confronted by them. Like someone who thinks that the bureaucracy of an policing-entity they thought had power, but was tied up in red tape and therefore useless.

Re: The Medusa Cascade, you are correct, only mentioned S3 onwards.

It's a bit odd that he'd use their law to threaten other people if he was that unbothered, but I'm more talking about the narrative of it. We'd heard about them for four seasons and when they finally showed up, it was a woman with a blue-rinse perm who chewed on the scenery for a bit, proved utterly useless, then disappeared forever. And her army was some rhinos.

I think the Judoon were illustrated as decent police, competent, and bent on doing their job in S3 Ep1 with Martha...as underlings of the Shadow Proc, I assume that The Doctor simply had never met the higher ups...and when he did he probably thought "THESE are the people who I've been threatening people with? What a circus."

I agree that finally meeting the Shadow Proclamation was pretty anti-climactic. They'd built it up for so long that I was expecting them to be more interesting, have more presence, maybe a bit more actual power.... But no, we got this crazy lady who didn't seem to know her head from her big right toe, and had no real power that we could actually see... I think that the showrunners probably realized this, and that's why the Shadow Proclamation is never again so much as mentioned, let alone featured.

It's a shame they were so anti-climactic, because those two finale episodes are probably some of my favourite of all of the new Doctor Who. Crazy ass Dalek Kan being all like "I danced and died a thousand times!" is perhaps my favourite line in all of Doctor Who.

Well, I Liked it.

More laid back, not as frenetic, but built up to some good moments of drama. Well acted too.

so....

I loved it. A LITTLE slow and top heavy in the first half, but overall very good. Capaldi was brilliant, and the phone call to Clara late in the ep really does help the NuWho fans deal with regeneration. The new opening titles are nice. The first post=regen ep always is a little manic, so it will be nice to see Capaldi be properly the Doctor (which he became in the last 20 minutes or so of this) in the next ep with no regeneratiion jitters and crazies.

Anyway, I really liked it. Encouraging that the story is, for now at least, simpler and without the ridiculous over-cramming that spoiled the later parts of Smith's run. It was great to see JLC get something proper to do, really for the first time since The Snowmen. And Capaldi was fantastic.

Done. I can say for sure I didn't like the story one bit, however the acting was really good for everyone. Lots of funny moments and do believe that Peter will make a fantastic Dr from his performance here.

I noticed something was missing in this 1st epi though. I won't say what because I want to see if anyone will have picked up on it and say it lol.

Ok so no one has mentioned it and it's bugging me. It was the Regen Breath. There was none...

That only happpened to Smith. Tennant never had it. My guess is they didn't bother since it would have happened between when he regenerates and then flies the TARDIS into the T-Rex gullet...and we just didn't see it.

I hope the over-arcing plot for Capaldi's entire run will be the great mystery of the disappearing buckets.
