Not necessarily, Paran found it out.

I bet we never find out about Kruppe's childhood, early life and stuff. Won't be suprised if he is in the same vein as the weird couple in Letheras (Ursto Hoobutt and Pinosel).

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

Don't know if there has been an agreement on the earlier question... but I think it's pretty clear Kruppe is NOT an ascendant, and technically not a mage (at least in the normal sense of Warrens). He is "merely" the smartest person in the world, whose intelligence is so great he can bend the rules, like travel and do things like awaken dead gods in his dreams.

not to mention that one of the first things we learn about him is that he's a deck reader who sees the deck in his head.

He *is* a mage - in a PoV with him he uses his warren to steal things in GotM. Doesn't mean he is a particularly powerful mage, though.

As for "what" exactly Kruppe is, Erikson says even he doesn't know.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Kruppe is a Deus Ex Machina wrapped in illusion of misshapen Santa claus, always eating, made interesting, simply to make us lost to his true, Deus Ex Machina nature.

Think about it:

He narrates
He gives gifts out of nowhere
He talks in third person
He is untouchable even by ascendants power
He smoothens the stories, even so in Memories of Ice.
He conveniently know better than to let Iskaral Pust takes Dragnipur
