I'm about halfway through this one (Book One of the Banned and the Banished), and so far I am really enjoying it. It's got aspects of typical fantasy naturally, but it's quite dark, and gory at times....I think what it really has going for it is the pacing, as I can't seem to put the bloody thing down....

Anyone else read this series? Thoughts?

I won't say too much as I started it and put it down fairly quickly...felt it was poorly written and uninspiring.

I read the first book of this once. Or started to anyway. Enjoyed the premise but something about the writing put me off, not really sure what. I can't remember whether I actually finished it but I didn't start the second.

I read his, Shadowfell, or something a rather. It left me feeling cold. I didn't enjoy his style at all.

Sorry :p

i managed the first book, started the second and failed.

and you know what the real problem was for me? the use of the d'rea'd ap'ostr'oph'e

seriously, it just grated. An apostrophe should be used to indicate either a contraction or posession.

They should NOT be used just to make the names more fantastical dammit. That is just irritating.
meh. Link was dead :(

It's funny. I researched the series before busting into it, and already enjoy the authors thrillers, and there are so many good reviews by the average joe that I was impressed. Like I said, halfway through and still digging it. Ah well, everyone can't like everything.

i read the whole series when i was younger and to be honest it was quite enjoyable. he has some strange ideas to be put in the lowly hero fighting the ancient bad guy genre but his writing did kind of put me off something about it i dont really like at all. but if that dosnt other you and you can make it through book 1 it does get slightly better

Tried it. Hated it. Apostrophes all over the place! How are you supposed to pronounce that?

Yeah, I realize that the apostrophes are annoying, but i got past it pretty quickly and just concentrated on story.

Ive read the series and to be honest I liked it quite alot IIRC as it was a while ago now, about the apostrophes yeah they are annoying but its quite easy to read by just reading it as if they werent there.

Surely the apostrophes indicate a glotal stop, as in T'lan Imass and as often used in South American languages, or just read them without!

Over halfway through now, and still not only enjoying, but surprised by a number of ideas that are quite interesting, and plotpoints that didn't go the typical fantasy way and couldn't be guessed at. Hoping this keeps up cause the series has like 6 books, or something.

Okay, so this book got boring in the latter half, and the characters started doing predictable things. Not only that, I had to struggle to the end. Hmmm....You people need to start smacking me....

LOL

My judgement of books has, of recent, been poor. what with Empire in Black and gold, and now this series. Sigh.

What the hell should I read now?

I read a couple of the James Clemens Godslayer books. I thought they were ok, with some decent enough characters, but I wasn't exactly blown away. I havent felt compelled to read any more, put it that way.

Felix Gilman's Thunderer. DO IT.

Or, if you want something sci-fi instead and you haven't read any Richard Morgan yet, him. I pick Morgan in particular because I just did a reread of Altered Carbon and Broken Angels. Could read Alastair Reynolds instead. Or Banks, who's my favourite sci-fi writer.

Celia Friedman's Coldfire trilogy. You know it makes sense.

I'm actually giving The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie another go, as I stopped reading it only because some other exciting book came out that I was looking forward to reading....and simply never got back to it.

I have Thunderer on my list for Christmas, so hopefully I'll get that.

The Coldfire trilogy is something I have considered in the past, perhaps I'll give it a go in the new year. Thanks guys!
