Good day everyone!
This is my first post on this excellent forum. I am currently reading throught the entire series for the 2nd time. I have just finished GoTM and I have a question about Paran and his fight in an alternate realm against the finnest.
I am confused by the whole finnest business. I realize that the finnest was the source of Jaghut Tyrant's main powers. I know that the Jaghut who enslaved the tyrant in the barrow originally stored his power in this device, but what exactly is a finnest?
Also, what is the link between the finnest and the house of azath? Do all houses of azath become created through a finnest such as this one? If not why did the house begin this time throught the finnest?
Also is there any ideas of where and why Paran was warped to this alternated realm when his sword was struck by Raest's power?
I am thanking everyone in advance for your replies!!!

Well, the finnest is purely and simply a device within which Reast "stored" the vast majority of his power.
The azath houses are entities (possibly) that arise wherever and whenever they are needed to. In this case, it was to protect the finnest, to stop anyone who shouldn't from getting their hands on it. To imprison it. At least, that is the interpretation I had. Someone else may come along and tell you something else completely different
But yes, there will be much more infrormation about Azaths revealed later Yasir...
And welcome to the forums, both of you

Hi..
This is my first post here too..
Actually, I finished reading GoTM for the first time about half an hour ago.. and needless to say.. there are points of confusion..
The whole Finnest part is one of them.. I have ur same understanding.. but with the added question mark as to what a house of Azath is!!
I found the book to be simply excellent.. I'm a big GRRM fan.. and was advised to read The Malazan Book of the Fallen by a friend.. who just gave me this hint "Be Patient.. things will start clearing up by the third book!".. so I was a bit worried.. when I started reading.. I was lost.. but things STARTed clearing up in the 2nd Daru chapters.. and I think SE did a great job in the build up..
I've read a bit in the forums.. and some of my confusions were answered.. especially regarding Shadowthrone and the Rope and their link with Sorry..
Sorry I can't answer ur question though

Well so far all we know is that the Azath are used to contain beings of great power exactly why we haven't the slightest idea. Although I do HOPE SE explaints something in the Bonehunters, which seems likely given the information we hav so far for the novel. But yeah the Azath sprung up to contain the Finnest and iirc the demon Rake was fighting with, makes sense, 3 beings of great power, two out to destroy one another and a third if it got control of finnest would become close to unstoppable.
As for Paran, as Dazer explained something to do with his role in the bigger picture of things. If you need clarification SoulKing feel free to ask in Memories of Ice, or atleast do a search regarding Paran's role (which you should know) it'll bring quite a few answers.
But honestly to Yasir, don't bother too much with asking questions rite now. Read upto Memories of Ice and after that you'll have figured out all the easy stuff, and then you may ask away.

Yeh I would agree with you there Brood.
The azath rose to contain the finnest so as Raest couldnt get it I think. or anyone else really.
The finnest is exactly what you called it, a thing that a Jaghut Tyrant, Raest in this case stored his power in. simple as that.
I think Paran was warped because at that stage his future role in the books, was taking place. Not the right forum to propely explain but Paran was chosen because what he becomes I believe.
Where he went ? Not sure,

Welcome Yasir!
As I mentioned I have read the books before but I cannot remember if Paran's fight against the Finnest and its ultimate link to the Houses of Azath is answered later in the series.
I can tell you that answers to your other questions will be answered in upcoming books, especially Memories of Ice. Personally I remember Deadhouse Gate as my favorite volume with Memories of Ice falling into a very close 2nd place. We'll see if I still feel this way after a second reading.
I also know that much information about Houses of Azath are answered in House of Chains and Midnight Tides so your questions will be undoubtedly answered in the future.
I am glad that you thoroughly enjoyed GoTM and I am warning you now, your life will be dominated by Erikson's world for the forseeable future.
