I was on a forum the other day that had a nifty Meebo plugin that seemed utterly painless to engineer. I don't know what sorta things IPB supports but I have to imagine there's something. Just occured to me as something that might be fun. Has anyone given it any thought?

ModCraft has that.
It also has a Ventrilo server....
And before it had Meebo chat it had IRC - although that costs money.
I don't think it would get a lot of use, personally. Most people who want to talk to others have them on MSN/Skype/whatever. Although it could be worth looking into....

I'm sure back in the mists of time there was a chat area on the forum which never got used by anyone except a few like Brood and Brynjar or someone. I think Silencer is correct if we want to chat we all have MSN and Skype etc.

We had a chat client back on EVE/infopop, it was almost never used, despite a big campaign to have it installed to start with. Not anywhere near worth the effort it might require, even if that's just clicking one box on/off...

We've tried the chat room idea twice now, the first time Mappo made a java application (I believe that's the term?) and I set one up in IRC, but that floundered after a few weeks. Rake then enabled one on infopop as Brood stated, but that suffered from similar problems.
Because the most frequent posters hail from all sorts of different time zones, it was hard to get more than 3-4 on at once and in those cases most people just used MSN.
