Right. Thanks for the info. So does anyone have any opinion of whether or not it is worth getting the DX version (The extra large model). Somehow it just sounds like it would be more practical to have a bigger screen but then on the other hand it also makes it more cumbersome.

How many lines of text is there room for on a regular Kindle? Does it fit a normal page of some 20 lines or so?

The DX seems ridiculously expensive.

You can adjust the size of the text on the 6" to a number of sizes. basically I have mine set to the default which is a little bigger than you'd see in the average paperback, but you can make it smaller or bigger if you wish.

The DX version is only physically bigger and would be a little more cumbersome. I'd not like to read the DX one on a subway or the like, but for at home it's probably fine...

....but I have zero issues with the 6" version, it's big enough.

Agreed. The 9" is the size of a freakin Ipad...which is way too big for convenience IMO.

6" is standard paperback size, so the only thing you gain from a bigger screen is more space to display pictures and more words per page - but pictures are shite on e-ink screens anyway, so I think it's just extra bling + cost for not much extra functionality.

Damn you people. Now I am actively trawling the internet to see if there is some kind of cheap offer on these things.

Is the 3G option worth it? personally I don't really see myself using it for anything else than reading books, so I don't really see a need for the 3G as long as I can use wifi.

Also, does it come with any kind of sleeve or cover? If not is it recommended that you buy something like the leather binder they are offering on the Amazon page?

It doesn't come with a cover, you have to buy one. The amazon leather lighted one is okay, but peruse them all and see which works best for you first....

Yes plaptypus.

I believe the screens on still involve glass (like an LCD) and that they will break fairly easily if impacted by something. Probably best to get a cover for it. If you get the amazon one at least you know it will fit. If you're aiming cheap, a couple pieces of box cardboard and some rubber bands will do.

I'd probably fashion a stylish one out of mahogany with brass inlay, but cetainly would go the cardboard route until it was complete.

Went ahead and ordered the regular black version with Wi-fi. It will be here in 5-7 days. I am giddy!

The eInk screens aren't glass.

It's more like a matte plastic if I were to describe it.

Good on you Apt! Enjoy it brother!

It will come faster than that.

I ordered mine and they said 5-7 days and it traveled from Phoenix Arizona to my place in Toronto Canada in LESS than 24 hours.

I'm pretty sure they high priority them cause they want you to be pleased from the get go.

Yours has to go overseas but I'd still wager it comes in 3 days.

The early Sony models *looked* like matte plastic but were most certainly glass. I would check that to make sure. It's still delicate even if they've switched to a polymer surface.

Agreed. I wouldn't want it bashed or anything certainly.

I have one of these amazing things now and it is frikkin awesome. My darling wife also paid over the odds for the snazzy leather case with the reading light (powered from the kindle itself) for decent bedtime reading without waking the little one.

It's damn good and as soon as anyone gets it, I'd suggest downloading a program called calibre which will help you organise your library. It can convert any format including pdfs to kindle and this kinda makes life easy as it means you dont have to.

The reader itseld is brilliant and means I dont need a library any more and can get rid of almost 3 decades worth of collecting...nah, I'll probably keep em...Reading on it is a joy, but at first it takes a while to ignore the grey background, but soon this becomes unnoticeable.

She bought the 3g version cos I wanted it, but to be fair, I did not really need this and the webkit browser thingy aint great for anything except text. My iphone provides a better internet experience, so unless I am skint and really need to know...Basically you can do without it.

Essentially, for just over a hundred quid you can read anywhere at any time on something that is simply...quite brilliant.

Now what I need to do now is get my wife to get me an ipad...Simply cannot justify the extravagance, but as a gift (to me of course) it's great.

Get a kindle, you'll like it.
