Oslo has actually been awarded best city for coffee in the world. Norwegians drink an absurd amount of coffee. Best to find a local coffee place though, and not an international chain - as with restaurants really.

I'll help you find one if you come here again, but only if you promise not to eat at Fridays!

I just got to enjoy a vicious, spiteful rant about how Syrian refugees should stay put and let themselves be bombed to death or otherwise killed instead of coming to Europe and expecting money and a place to stay, because it's obviously wrong to want your own hide and that of your children safe and fed. Also, they're all thieves and terrorists. Also, everything is the fault of Obama, and Merkel is his b*itch.

Rant courtesy of? My dear mother.

I initially didn't even understand what she was getting at, as she managed to somehow connect it all with eastern Ukraine and how nobody gives a shit what happens there and how Putin is right.

I almost wanted to drown myself in the kissel I was cooking. Last time I checked the reason we're where we are is that she wanted to get away from the poverty, corruption and bad job situation in, oh, yes, eastern Ukraine, and provide better opportunities for me. I fail to understand how she can cathegorically claim other people only want to mooch off "good working people's" money when she herself came here fully intending to find work and not depend on the state.

The political and social situation is rather strained atm, with new reports of thousands of people coming in every day, but so much hypocrisy just hurts. There's lots of panic-mongering. But really, use your brain. Unfortunately, even citing numerical facts does nothing with my mother. And actually, I just keep my mouth shut, else it'll only get worse. Like that, at least she cools down again after the impromptu rant.

And actually I intended to complain about another hypocrisy, but that now pales in contrast.
Do you know this thing when someone says something that sounds perfectly sensible at that moment, but when you've had time to think about it, it becomes appallingly hypocritical?
Yesterday, I met with a friend I hadn't seen in a while. Eventually, she said something like it'd be nice if people stopped making a huge deal of sexual orientations, because what's it matter, people are people and not defined by what gender they prefer. Except she went on to completely walk all over MY sexual orientation immediately after that, saying she's still up to the challenge of finding me a date. Excuse me, but that's not a challenge, it's blatantly telling me to my face that I'm delusional. Except in nicer words. I'd thought we were done with that *facepalm*

I'd try to find better friends, but she's really a great person outside of this 'everyone needs to be paired-up and if you think otherwise, you're just pretending'-nonsense.

I sometimes wonder if your mother and my mother have a psychic connection, Puck, because I had the exact same conversation with mine this past Friday evening. XD (despite herself being an immigrant from England for the same reasons... Apparently it's ok if you don't need to be a refugee and have some money and aren't Muslim? But if the alternative is dying you absolutely must not flee your country. I don't even...)

*sigh*

At least for this kind of thing I think it's not uncommon for the older generations. Seems to be pretty ingrained in them and has a natural blind side for any hypocrisy on their own part (which there almost always is). :p

Anyway, not sure it helps any to know that it's horrifying common, but it is. XD

It does, actually. means it's not just my mom, as sad as that is.

Also, it really seems impossible to do it right..
About to get killed? - Stay put.
Have no money and have to flee? - Stay where you are.
Scrape together your last money so you can flee? - If you can afford THAT, you're obviously not in need of help.
*sigh*

Also, yeah, unfortunately it does seem more common. On the other hand, when I see how many people are trying to do what they can to help, of any generation, it really makes me feel ashamed. I mean, yeah, we can't help, but that's no reason to be hateful.

Messing with my groove today: the weather. It's almost September and it's 30°C. Why?!

Being made to wait for 2 hours to get one scrap of paper. The greatest villains of fiction are nothing compared to an entrenched bureaucracy

This is totally generational (or seems it). My mother has had this conversation with my older sister recently apparently (she would not dare broach it with me, as we once had a huge blowup about their bigoted feelings about race and I told my mother in no uncertain terms she was NEVER to speak to me about religion or race or even other cultures again if she wanted to maintain a relationship with me)..and my sister was LIVID after my mother aired her feelings.

Neither of us can quantify how our parents generation is so backwards and blind about these topics, and we (for the most part) seem to see it entirely differently.

So add me to the list of "horrifyingly common" too.

Apart from the ice cream, that's South Asian bureaucracy almost everywhere. Those fucking office hours posted on the wall are always lies.

It did turn into one, kind of, didn't it? I was so sleepy-miserable I didn't read anything I typed.

Every detail is true though.

You see, I made allowance for the false office hours. I gave them an hour extra. It still didn't work. I have dealt with bureaucracy before. But this is a whole new level of shittiness. Essentially they do not want you completing your work in one day. They want you to come back repeatedly. I refuse to play along.

And I still don't know who ate my ice creamPosted Image
