Could the pain be described as a very intense version of the tingling one gets when a foot is asleep and waking up?

I have an aunt with fibromyalgia. I'm male, but have peripheral neuropathy caused by 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 45%. I was in a burn unit for 105 days. The entire time I was on a morphine drip and it didn't touch the pain in my feet and hands. When they moved me to the inpatient physical rehab unit the doctor there said, "Oh, that's neurogenic pain and morphine doesn't help with that. We'll take care of it."

Neurogenic pain is best handled with anti-convulsives rather than pain meds. Gabapentin (Neurontin) worked well for a long time, but gave me seriously weird dreams. Now I'm using Neupro patches. They work better without as many side effects as the neurontin. The one biggie for me with the Neupro patches is some serious mood changes for the 3 or so weeks it took to build up in my system.

Yeah, sadly the medical community has trouble with fibromyalgia as others on thread have indicated. There is an inbuilt cynicism to the system, especially after doctors and other medical staff get jaded from "bad" patients who play the system or are just plain ineffectual humans. STDs should be eradicated, but because people don't take their medicine correctly (if at all) and don't get their sexual partners to take medicine, the problem persists. You have other people with chronic conditions like diabetes who don't take their medicine properly (regularly and in correct doses) and end up burdening the system with the end-stage results of their poorly controlled disease. You also have the people who pretend to be in pain and sell their prescriptions on the black market to either just make money or to buy more of the less expensive narcotic (I hear that heroin is particularly cheap in NY from one of my forensic colleagues).

So, for a genuine patient like you with a disease they can't understand and symptoms they can't measure/verify, you get the backlash of medical cynicism, for which as a medical professional I apologize.

I do see changes in the educational system trying to reverse the culture, but that takes time, skill and dedication and may require a stronger voice from the patients on their own behalf.

I agree with the others though, keep trying a new doctor every so often. There are several stories of patients shunted from place to place only to have one open minded doctor figure out what is really going on or figure out what actually works. And when you are an established patient, you are stuck with what you are diagnosed with, even though in chronic conditions people need to have a rethink every so often to make sure nothing has been missed.

In the end, my general advice is to remember that doctors are just people, prone to the same mistakes and misconceptions you see everywhere in every job. It doesn't justify mistreating patients, but unfortunately, just like in any other consumer experience, you need to stand up for yourself and be smart to the system. Good luck.

Im not completely sure, but i think it was a Glioblastoma, whatever that is. All i know is that it is one of the worst ones to get as it is highly malignant and grows real fast.

Also, Briar King, im sorry to hear about your troubles man. That sounds like a horrible thing to go through. Sorry to say its way out of my depth, so i dont have any real advice, but just try to stay positive.

Bk tried medical marijuana? Proven to increase the efficacy of pain meds, more relief for taking the same amount, or possibly lowering your typical intake. Worth looking into depending on where you live.

My room-mate has his card and I live in one of the more right wing states. It may become legal this year in AZ and on the outside chance next year...
