Tough decision.
I have one with kidney failure right now. We are treating him but I think eventually... sooner than later... we will have to make that decision.

So this morning I was getting ready to leave for work, the gf readying to set out as well. I'm still barefooted, she's in her heels. She walks up to me to say something and steps on my toes. I scream in pain. She gets offended, says something amounting to "well, SORRY, but it's not like I did it on purpose????" in an offended manner. Before I get the chance to respond, she leaves and slams the door.

People get flustered when unexpected things happen and do silly things as a result. Don't hold it against her.
My ex hated, hated, hated any raising of my voice, even if it was when I was in pain (I'm thinking of her accidentally smashing my recently cut finger). She'd take it personally, say something back at me to "defend" something and then kind of sulk for a while. The surprise of the shout and the fact that she'd caused it sort of made her momentarily nutso and she apologized later.
Heck, I remember once I had food poisoning after some bad street food and she was trying to baby me through puking in the toilet. In between heaves, I told her "No, please. Go watch tv and let me get through this." in a loud voice as my hearing aids were off. She got mad about being pushed away and my tone of voice, left and watched two hours of Disney channel to cool down. She really was new to having to deal with anyone who wasn't in perfect health and I didn't hold it against her too much.
I think I had similarly bad moments after I'd physically hurt someone, but they were when I was young with my brothers. We were always breaking something or slicing something open and learned to wait politely while the other person got over the shock and could conduct damage assessment. Over time, it got to be a routine thing and now that I grapple with people, it's a continued habit of just waiting quietly to hear back from the other person.

Seriously?? The key word in that is "she".
"She"s get angry at you. For something. They wait X number of hours/days/weeks/months/years for you to notice what exactly you did to cause that anger. The longer it takes you to figure out what exactly you did to cause the anger, the worse the reactions will be. Note that the reactions will usually have nothing to do with what is immediately apparent to you. If you're lucky, and she is feeling generous, she will tell you what it was that angered her in the first place. This rarely happens.

I also in no way agree with what you said about women and anger. Almost everyone reacts inappropriately at first to unexpected things. There is no gender line there.

Lack of lawyers. If defendants could just stop trying to represent themselves and hire a lawyer my job would be so much easier. Well, more difficult I guess but a lot less frustrating.

Barriers for laweyr-ism are even higher in .pl to get into the industry, though they are being loosened. You should be glad - less lawyers = higher fees!

Well, there's not so much a lack of lawyers as a lack of people who understand that representing themselves is a bad idea. I do not want a forty page exposition on the threat of Chinese produce in Norway. I want a conscise explanation as to why you are not guilty, or at least not as guilty as we argue.
edit: I mean, it's not that hard to become a lawyer here. You need a Master of Law from one of three universities in Norway. Hardly insurmountable.

I don't know. The practice you need in order to work as a lawyer on your own is two years, and you can do it through many other venues than a private law firm. Furthermore, considering the responsibility you take on when accepting a client, a two year practice period seems more than reasonable.
