Standing in the middle of the streetcar at an exit waiting for my stop to come up, a thug asshole behind me about 3 or 4 feet loudly exclaimed "Get the fuck out of my face!" To which I turned to glance assuming he couldn't possibly be talking to me, I was far from him and besides, it's public transit...I can stand where I wish can't I?
He looked me in the eye and repeated that I "get the fuck out of his face".
I wanted to say "I'm nowhere near your face." But I didn't say anything. Then the stop chimed and I got off the car.
But seriously asshat? It's bad enough that our transit system sucks, but you have to act like a dickhead to random people minding their own business?

Shoulda taken him out, QT.
I have promised my future wife that I won't rashly (her word) lash out at random asshats who exist in public when I'm out and about (This frustratingly includes mouthing off to idiot texting/talking movie patrons), as she fears I'll get injured if someone has a weapon. She's not wrong to be worried, my city gets worse by the day for such things.

I think you did the right thing, some subhumans isn't worth the potential consequences of a fight. Nor should you resort to newtons law as long as they don't try to attack you.
I struggle with this on a frequent basis. The Ladybyss doesn't love it.
Something about people who are blatantly threatening, deliberately rude, or willfully blind inconsiderate really triggers my 'Must. Confront. Evil.' reflex in a way that is likely to get me into a fight i will not win one day.
