Sigh.

Spike Lee being a total douchebag on Twitter to/about the open letter a graphic designer (who worked on the poster for his OLDBOY remake) wrote to him asking for him to intervene/investigate the agency who hired him...and how he was not only screwed out of payment by said agency who the production hired to make the poster art....but they have blatantly stolen his design, changed it a bit and slapped their own logo on it and called it theirs.

Seriously, I've said this before but Celebrities should NOT manage their own Twitter accounts. They should all have PR people to do it.

This just makes Lee look REALLY bad for not wanting to investigate the guy's claim....but worse yet his tweet was downright dismissive and snarky.

Here's the Letter where the graphics designer in question explains what has apparently transpired: http://juanluisgarci...dear-spike-lee/

And Here is Lee's cold response on twitter: https://twitter.com/...084275969085440

Like no one is asking Lee to buy the guy's story outright (though it's kind of hard to argue with Garcia's facts, it seems like he has indeed been screwed), but dude...INVESTIGATE shit occurring on your watch. It's really not that hard. And secondly DON'T tweet shit like that...

Looks like Garcia is pulling a social media sympathy play because he doesn't want to take on the ad agency directly.
Fair enough. It's a weak move but he admits there was no contract and he doesn't have the stomach for a real fight.

But the sympathy play is just that if he's not prepared to actually try and claim what he may be due.

Social media'ing Spike Lee just makes it obvious. Suing him would have likely gotten him further. Hell, just hiring a half decent lawyer would have.

Instead he prompted a nasty twit from the guy he was trying to impress.

I dunno... celebrities can twit stupidity as readily as anyone. If they don't want to risk the backlash they should just stay off it.

Yah I've kinda learned to ignore everything he does off-screen because he's a sizable prick.

Edit: I think QT's right about that response. Freelance/independent artists are being ripped off and predated upon constantly -- there's like a new case every day in the fashion industry, Forever 21 being one major perpetrator, but it happens wherever creative content is used. And it's just that much grosser when an artist outright dismisses the legitimate claims of another.

So you're a big Director...so what...you're on Twitter, and Facebook...you can't CHOOSE to be above social media and all that it entails. You deal with what comes your way on it.

As far as I'm concerned the Open Letter was a guy at the end of his rope with theft. And a private email to Spike and/or his people could very likely have gone nowhere. The Open Letter blows the doors off it and makes it un-ignorable.

If Lee is going to manage his social media account himself, he needs to be a man and own up to shit happening on his watch. All he had to say was "We're looking into this."

But he chose the dick response instead.

He gets no sympathy from me for it.

Lastly, It was a viable option for a man who's quite clearly been screwed.

Recall, for example, Matthew Vaughn being SUPER irate when a piece of unfinished, unapproved marketing for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS hit the web? He went searching for the culprit who leaked it, and then in good faith apologized to fans and gave them two ACTUAL approved pieces of art for it, and then dropped the teaser trailer a little while later. That's a Director who is willing to go the extra mile for ALL aspects of his own production....and yet Spike can't be bothered to investigate the guys claim?

Weak-sauce.

You can choose not to respond, or at least not to respond on Twitter. Put another way, big Director has the same choice every other human has to not put thumb to phone.
Lee made a choice, likely a bad one.

because everything he posts is automatically accurate and true?

He lives in America. The number of lawyers who would have wet themselves at the opportunity to sue Spike Lee on a contingency fee is higher than the population of Toronto.

I agree the email would have gone nowhere, but if Lee had been thinking, he would have ignored it.

Nah, all he had to say was nothing. He has people. People who have people. And THOSE people likely hired the agency in the first place. if he really felt like he had to do something he should have told those people to do so, not taken to Twitter.

.

Agreed.

Viable, sure. Effective? Best? Likely not.

Vaughn decided to act to defend his work. All good for him.

But here either Garcia or the agency did the equivalent of the thing that set Vaughn off.

Lee's response is fail, but social media doesn't automatically oblige him to do anything, and since Garcia likely now DOES have an an entire law firm clawing at his door to represent him, the worse thing Lee likely could have done was take responsibility and open himself up to blame.

The one thing i didn't agree with QT about was that celebrities shouldn't handle their own Twitters. That's like telling Johnny Knoxville NOT to ride a golf cart up and over a ramp-like hill at full speed.

90 minutes of Knoxville instructing his PR staff on how to ride a golf cart up and over a ramp-like hill at full speed would be more entertaining than a lot of his other stuff.

Agree.

It's sad really. Though I think one of the glories of social media is that people in power positions are being held to their shittiness now, because they can't hide it. It's possibly going to help people think before they speak/type...and that can only be a move in the right direction.

Oh and another nugget...he apparently OWNS the Ad Agency that did the screwing SpikeDDB so not only is he the captain of the ship here, he's also the main man behind the nasty ass curtain.

Only as long as they're stupid enough to respond, or feel like they're obliged to respond.

Not surprised, but still figure he knew nothing about it til now, and if his people told him a completely different version, his choices are fight garcia, fight his own people, or wait til it inevitably passes.
Unless/until Garcia lawyers up.

watched the post-Vilnius UA-EU summit fiasco rally in Kyyiv. Our opposition are idiots.

People want action, people a plan, people want a way to get rid of the criminals in power. and the opposition says "we hear you, we will hold a gather ing on Sunday, and we will make them pay". And they are already basically conceding the fact that they won't do much till the next election...in 2015.

ETA: and then, at 4 AM, government rounded up and "dispersed" about a thousand protesters. Now people are furious. Some cities are making statements that may lead to them finding current govt illegitimate.

Yah, California just passed an anti-Revenge Porn law a couple months back, but it's still pretty rampant.
