So the new MUMFORD & SONS album came out today.

on iTunes it's $14.99...and the actual CD is $18.99.

So, considering that almost every band signed to a major label is continuously in debt by millions to that record company for their albums and the debt just carries over from album to album (see documentary ARTIFACT about it), these jacked up prices are going to the record label and not the artist, I refuse to dole it out to them.

What I woudn't give for a world where a fan could give the artist the money directly and say "I love your music, here I'm paying you for being able to listen to it. Thanks for making great music".

Amanda Palmer's Kickstarter album/tour was the first win in that fight to get there, but it seems like it's going to be a slow road in which record companies will get more and more belligerent and gouging as they get more and more unseated by artist - fan interaction on a monetary level.

If I could give any band advice it would be that when they are finally off contract from the major labels (bands that have an at least established fanbase), it would be to crowdfund the rest of their career. I would much rather my money goes to the artist creating the art, rather than a faceless corporation out to screw bands and fans alike.

What about Radiohead's 'pay what you want to' album? Serious question, I have no info about it beyond 'excellent idea'.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Indeed. Palmer did that as well once her Kickstarter album was out as well on her website. Trent Reznor did it with his 2nd to last NIN album as well.

It's a great idea. It's not something you can do all the time (for obvious reasons), but it shows a marked step forward to the relations directly between an artist and a fan.

Sometimes i think people at the gym think their moms gonna come clean up after them when they're done.

Its the only explanation for leaving shit all over the place.

I hate people. Well, most people. You guys are ok.

They certainly shouldn't be shitting on the gym equipment. That's disgusting!

On a serious note, yes, when people don't clean up after themselves at the gym it pisses me right off. A few resident's in my condo building do this in our condo gym and I watch them do it and start to walk away...and if I'm in there I ALWAYS pipe up and say stuff like "You gonna clean that up for the next person?" They always give me a "look" that speaks "how dare I ask them to be responsible adults?!" but they usually come back to clean up. Still, no one should have to tell them.

Public Enemy were 'download our shit, we make our money on the road by putting up 3 hour quality performances for you!' several years ago already.

Festivals (because roadies, backgrounds, lodging et cetera are provided for), then concerts are where the money is for artists nowadays. The issue is that a record company is required to provide PR and marketing plus those fancy videoclips.
I mean, if Amanda Palmer wasn't known, she'd probably not be able to launch a successful kickstarter either.

Every single time my two office colleagues, one male, one female, are walking in or out of the office they give my screen a good look and a good read. I see it because they're faces reflect on the big glossy screen. Suckers.
Also, they listen to every single conversation I have either with students in the lab or other post docs in the office or the lab or the phone etc and generously provide their unasked for insights. I can't talk to anybody in here without being overheard by either one of them! If I need advice, I will ask thankyouverymuch.
The other day I was discussing some results with a student in our office, quite interesting ones, and she sat in front of her computer and then was suddenly turned towards us and spent 15 minutes "reading" the same half of the piece of paper she had in her hands. Finally, when we were discussing something else, she offered her advice not even looking at us!
Furthermore, she is a shark and collects all kinds of information around the lab and projects without much sharing anything of hers, unless it's useful for her to do so.

I am so incredibly pissed off right now.
but are they worth preserving?

You need to write "SOD OFF YOU NOSY COW" in huge writing on your monitor the next time she is walking close to your desk. Then pretend like you have no idea how that got there & pretend to work on something else...

Next time you "want" to have a conversation with either of them, stand up and go stand behind them, assure them that they can continue working as you can multitask just as well as they have proven they can.

Absolutely and she's right up front about that when she speaks of its success. You need a solid fanbase to succeed on that scale on a crowdfunding service, which she luckily had.

Sorry to hear that, Destiny.

I came home to find out that someone (my dad, it turns out) had turned my iaito back to front, upside down and then put it back on the stand, while I was at work. Nor would he explain when I demanded why. That probably seems quite trivial to most of you but no one touches my sword without my fucking permission!

I'm genuinely perplexed. Even after checking it over and displaying it correctly again, I'm still troubled by it. Posted Image

Had to put my last ferret to sleep. I'm done with ferrets, I love them but they have too short of a life span. Just dogs for me from here on out.

Also, still don't know for sure if the house will be ours or not. We are supposed to close and move on sunday, but the seller is struggling to xcomw up with the closing costs he ows. So, I might find out friday that I will be homeless on the first, or I might have a cool house.
