Amazon UK's release date is 27 August 09. I didn't see any mention here, just all the rants. So i figured i'd let you know the date must have been pushed back.

I'm a little out of the loop, do we still not even have an actual synopsis?

As far as writing goes the more complex a world is built the more complex and time consuming writing a book in it will take. This is simply because of people like all of us force a good product to be written. Given SE's nature and fields of study I'd expect nothing less than what I've seen in his writing. His landscapes are a little weak but that's most authors in my definition (I'm a Geology Major). SE's books make following Heroes or Lost on tv child's play. That's why they are so good. I'm so bummed that DoD is coming out while I'm in field camp!
For all those people who think Jim Butcher is a 1 book a year person. You are wrong. In the last 5 years Jim has maintained 2 series (Dresden and Alera). They're great books with tons of humor in Dresden. They aren't as complicated; but when you sit on your butt in front of a computer doing GIS for hours its nice to relax with some light reading after.
In consideraton of Wheel of Time, Brandon Sanderson is writing it according to the author's notes along with three other series of his own novels (There's a true balancing act! Elantris, Alcatraz and Mistborn).

Yeah, I haven't checked up on DoD's progress for ages. Where are we on it? Last I heard SE was about halfway done, but that was months ago. I'd assume it's nearly done now if it's coming out in the summer.
I didn't notice this muddled and incoherent response to my earlier post otherwise I'd have responded earlier:
WTF? Of course it can take four years to write a novel. It can take a hell of a lot longer: 10 years for Lord of the Rings, 12 years for Jean Auel's last caveman book, three years for Lynch and Rothfuss' new novels, five years for a Chabon novel, seven or eight years for a Christopher Priest book. 3-4 years for a novel is considered pretty ordinary in publishing terms.
No, but I am a mod on the official ASoIaF forum and have been keeping track of this stuff for some considerable time.
And no-one is disputing it's been almost three-and-a-half years since AFFC came out, and just under four since GRRM started writing it. Your point?

Are you living with George? Are you his publicist? Agent? Since the answer is No, then your "well-informed" status is a sham.
I'm dealing in reality---four years, no book. That is just a fact.

I have to agree that as much as I've loved A Song of Ice and Fire, I'm disappointed at the time Martin spends between books. I could forgive the lag on aFfC, he had planned to "skip" the 5 years after the last book and mostly cover it in retrospectives. And then he discovered he couldn't do that in good conscience. Fair enough, those things happen as an author. The story gets a life of it's own sometimes, and you just have to go with it. But aDwD was specifically said to be over half done in the afterward to aFfC. To see the same thing play out again is depressing. And it honestly says to me that he's lost the plot.
Also waiting for the third book in the Instrumentalities. Now if we could just convince Cook to give us a map.
Bakker's new series should also be fun. Though I was a bit let down by the ending of A ThousandFold Thought. It really seemed a big build up to a too-short payoff. But the characters in that series...wow.
But at the end of the day, there's 2 things I'll need to order from England. Football Manager 2010, and DoD.
It really is amazing the rate at which he turns out work. And I don't think the quality has gone down at all. Some books are stronger in some areas than others. But I think that's him growing and stretching as an author too. At this point, he's earned the right to experiment with his craft. And the fact he's willing to, as opposed to the Salvatore's and Jordan and others who were satisfied with staying at the same level of their craft as long as they were popular, is what puts him in the front rank of authors in any genre today.

In my opinion, Martin should take all the time he needs on Dragons, if it is what's required for the quality we've come to expect.
However.
His refusal to give any form of update since Jan 1, 2008 (because a few hundred-out of how many thousands, were giving him crap) has left me severely unamused. I don't care that he watches football, goes on vacations, goes on signings, goes to cons. He has every right to, if that's what he wants to do. But I don't care to know about it either. At this point, my one question if I ever met him would not be the obvious "when can we expect Dance", but instead would be "so are you still writing it, or did you quit and that's why you won't let anyone ask you about it?".
Meh.
Greatly looking forward to The Wise Man's Fear this year, and whatever Mr. Butcher releases as well. And of course Mr. Erikson and Mr. Esslemont's books.

i'm reading the prince of nothing trilogy right now by Scott Bakker. i only got it cuz erikson is quoted on the front cover of the paperback.
the quote claims he likes it.
first book is called "The Darkness that Comes Before" Pretty damn good so far.
books one and two are out so far, no idea how long. i dont get to bookstores much, nor do i browse online very often.
i figure if Steven Erikson thinks its a good fantasy series, then it's worth a read. the next question to ask is - is the quote an accurate representation of SE's opinion? or is it out of context????

Actually all three books are out now, I just finished the trilogy myself. I didn't care for it really, but it did have potential, so I think there's hope for Bakker yet! If you like the first one you will probably like all three. Let me know what you think of the end of book three I'd be interested to see what you think about it.
I purchased and read the Trilogy almost 2 years ago now. I enjoyed the overall storyline and for the most part Bakker's style. Take out the fantasy elements and it almost read like an account of the crusades. There were certainly some nagging dislikes for me but these were mostly due my inability to completely suspend my disbelieve in regards to Anasuurimbor's(sp?) abilities. I am also not a fan of such overt sexuality in a fantasy novel. Don't get me wrong there are places in any story where it is necessary, I just felt like Bakker beats you over the head with it. Again though that is question of style.

Just also like to add the point that i dont think we can fairly critisie authors if they go over deadlines. hell you dont know whats going on in their heads or lives! they come out when they come out as frustrating as that is. well if the books crap then let the critasising begin! :zanth:

The Mass Market edition of Toll the Hounds is coming out in less than a month, that means we have the prologue of the next, right?
So any chance we get it in advance between now and then?

To be honest, I tend just to think that as long as an author is writing i'm not bothered how long it takes. That said I'm not a fan of Martin so it doesn't really bother me anyway.
As for whether SE writing's declined... I would agree that its more down to certain unlikeable characters who drag it down for. That said its been that way since DHG (felisin and heboric can just go die as far as i'm concerned) so no real problems there and RG is probably my favourite since MoI.
Incidently, does anyone have any idea when rothfuss' next book is actually due because he seems to posses the single best grasp of prose ive read in years

Rothfuss wrote a pretty hilarious (and long) post to address the issue on his blog:
http://www.patrickrothfuss.com/blog/2009/0...f-book-two.html
Then when he realized GRRM and others had written similar stuff lately, he posted about the synchronicity:

Just posted the announcement on the blog.
Just heard back from Simon Taylor (SE's UK editor), and the majority of DoD has already been turned in. SE is working on the final chapters because they contain "massive battle scenes." As far the pub date goes, Bantam Press are gunning for late summer. . .
Cheers,
Patrick

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....
