Damn. Just finished reading NoK...

...and only now it strikes me that it was NOT written by SE!

Sure there is a noticeable difference, but the richness is the same... loved it!

"Dassem advanced and Temper finished off the last of the escort guards opposing him, then edged sideways to close the gap. Surgen attacked with both swords and Dassem countered, his blade in a blur. Then a flash across Temper's vision and Dassem gasped, bowed forward as if cradling a wound."

Pretty sure the Claws did it with a a projectile weapon.

Dassem sounds even more powerful after reading that battle. He was holding his own with only a sword against a dual-wielding Patroned Champion that chopped down most of the Sword. Then after getting injured he was still killing left and right. ICE wrote the battle amazingly well I thought.

For all we know, it could have been disgruntled Hood cultists. DU does have a running grudge against old Raghead.

- Abyss, also notes it could have been Professor Plum, in the Library, with a crossbow.

Seemed to me that he got hit by some magical projectile of some sort.

It's strongly suggested that the claw damaged him somehow in an attempted assassination, probably with a projectile weapon of some sort, magical or otherwise.

Given Laseen's actions later in the book, it seems clear she was behind the assassination attempt. So the Claw would've carried it out.

Yea it was more than likely a Claw with a crossbow or projectile weapon...though the assassin probably knew it wouldnt kill him but maybe hoped that it would have given the champion he was fighting a opening to kill him. Which it probably would have if not for Temper...the human wall :p
...┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐...

Why dont they make the whole plane out of that black box stuff?

Agreed it was a Claw - there was a full-on battle going on around Dassem v. Serger [?], and someone in the press was there to see Dassem lost.

That sequence, btw, from the battle to Dassem's entrance to Temper holding against the YGhatan Champion, convinced me that ICE can writ something worth reading with SE's Malazan books.

- Abyss, alas, poor Sword, we hardly knew ye.

I agree, and it's definitely nice getting some background info about main characters.
