A few questions about motivations

Having just finished TTH, I've been wracking my brain to try and work out answers to several questions about the convergence of major powers in Darujhistan. Here's what I've worked out so far:
Anomander Rake:Senses that there's serious problem (Chaos?) within Dragnipur that might threaten the Warren of Darkness. Decides that the only way to take care of it is to get killed by Dragnipur but wants to make sure the sword doesn't fall into the wrong hands.
Dassem Ultor:Wants to kill Hood for what the god did to his daughter.
Here are the burning questions:
1. How does Anomander know that he needs to go to Darujhistan?
2. Why does Anomander kill Hood? Is it just to get some backup inside of Dragnipur to hold off Chaos?
3. Why does Dassem go to Darujhistan? Does he somehow know that the physical incarnation of Hood is going to show up?
4. How did the other players seem to know that something major was going to go down in Darujhistan?
Wild speculation is more than welcome!

1 & 2 were something worked out between Hood and Rake beforehand. Why they chose Darujhistan, not sure... maybe they knew Dassem would be there.
3. Traveller is looking for Hood. Where he was intending to look before he was shipwrecked on Genabackis no one knows. When he got to Genabackis he set straight out for Daru... where else would you go to renew you hunt for a major God but the premier city of the continent, maybe the world.
4. Too tired to write interesting things for this one.... there's so much that could be written. Maybe tomorrow.

The key word is 'convergence'.
It's a running theme throughout the series that everyone comes to the same place to kick off for no apparent reason.
It's like a Saturday night in Burnley. :folken:

before the forum crash abyss had a wonderful breakdown of the events leading up to TtH climax, starting from the creation of light. the D-stan issue is moot really. power draws power and D-stan is packed with high powered ascendants at the time of TtH, with more incoming.

i think of it like a bunch of high school kids all trying to be at the right party. all it takes is someone hearing that "there's going to be ppl at d-stan" and all of a sudden everyone's showing up with big swords and terrible booze.

if you look at the flashback from draconus you see that broods hammer was the one he used and when you look at the breaking of the sword scene there where anvils so that is why they needed to go to d-stan

I think it's a general consensus in one of the other threads (this might have been before the crash) that it happened in D-stan because Baruk is the only person rake would trust to destroy the sword after he died. The sword also needed to be protected long enough for Brood to arrive and break it. Personally I think that's one of the reasons Dassem was the person who Rake let himself be killed by - powerful enough to not get killed instantly by Rake, but unlikely to then pick up the sword himself. I also think that's why Karsa and Dassum were prodded onto the same path, more protection for the sword. Could be wrong bout the Karsa bit, as he is also told at the end that he is needed in D-stan to kill a god.
As to why Dassem and the others (spite envy kallor etc) arrived in D-stan in the first place, it's probably the convergence issue. Seems that most ascendants either have some way of divining that something big will be going down somewhere, or are simply drawn to other great power without actually realizing it. Seems to me that's what happened with Spite and Envy who both arrived in the same city while seemingly knowing nothing of the other's intentions or of Rake's, though they were quick to settle their differences when the saw what was up for grabs.

Like Erikson's iterated i don't know how many times: power draws power.

Let's take into account that Dassem was more or less pointed in the right direction by Shadowthrone and Cotillion when at Morn... I'm sure that if he had gone the wrong way, the Hounds that were accompanying him would probably have tried to do something about it.

My sig comes from a game in which I didn't heed Blend's advice. So maybe this time I should. ~ Khellendros
I'm just going to have to come to terms with the fact that self-vote suiciding will forever be referred to as "pulling a JPK" now, aren't I? ~ JPK
