God of Death

Again, the title is self explanatory. With Hood's demise, High House Death is without a ruler, and there is no one to greet the souls of the dead. So, who takes up the mantle? Any ideas?

You should maybe change the title of the thread... That's a pretty big spoiler.

I believe it says right here....http://www.malazanempire.com/IPBforum/index.php?showtopic=10896...that if you want to avoid spoilers, to avoid the thread, but I see your point.

the thread title will still show up in the new posts search. I avoided the forum for months because of that.
as for the question - while i was reading the book i thought dassem was being set up by the other gods (hood and ST, primarily) to be the reluctant new god of death. lord of tragedy is not so far a leap.
It obviously didn't turn out that way so i don't know anymore.

Didn't Hood mention how the other gods would have to deal with their own, and that people who didn't worship a specific god could just suck it. I seem to remember getting that feeling from some of the things Hood said in Dragnipur.
If there is to be a new god of death though, might it have something to do with the deal hood made with Paran? Is it Paran himself?

I would be surprised if Paran occupied two positions in the Deck of Dragons, as MotD and King of HHD(eath). And I'm guessing they'll be plenty of death to come with the gathering of all the gods of war, one would hope there would be someone tended to the gate of the dead.

My top two replacements if one does evolve would be...
Edgewalker - i know, i know he's aspected to Shadow, but it would explain the 'Mitigate' thing.
Dessembrae/Dassem - who better to take on the aspect of death than someone who was once its Knight.
- Abyss, ...also, Jimmy Hoffa...

I think that it's like Hood said the gods have to take care of their own dead from now on, I don't see any reason not to believe him.

I think that's why all the Gods of War are being rounded up... I think the Gods of War will now be responsible for the realm of death and death in general... *nods*

Are you sure you are not confusing mitigate with migrate? Unless I miss my guess mitigate is a synonym for mediate.
Dessambre/Dasem would by a possible candidate for God of Death but what about Karsa as new Lord of Death. Back in HoC he collected souls of those he killed. I can see him sitting in the "afterlife" judging souls.

guess missed my friend, mitigate means to reduce the damage of an event and it is indeed mitigate that edgewalker has been called to do in the prologue

Found this on dictionary.com:
Mitigate: to make (a person, one's state of mind, disposition, etc.) milder or more gentle; mollify; appease.
So, couldn't the whole mitigate thing mean that Edgewalker is there simply to keep them all from killing each other?

that could be, but it would mean that he is more powerful than hood, ST and Rake, to which i must say WTF HAXOR!
either that or edgewalker is such a great guy that they wouldn't do that kinda thing around him.

Actually that's not a bad guess. SE would not have brought in the Redeemer for sheer amusement, so surely Itkovian has a role to play in the upcoming events.

My own theory is ST will take over HHDeath. Edgewalker was there to mitigate a three way deal between Rake,Hood and ST. Rake kills Hood, ST takes HHDeath. In return, ST/COT delayed Dassem enough to prevent his vengeance on Hood. And Rake saves KG from chaos.
I can't decide if ST was lying when he told Dassem he had nothing to do with the shipwreck. Mael seems too busy helping Tehol restore the Lether empire and tends to be mostly isolationist except when angered by the CG and the Errant.

I have been kicking this around my head for a while, and it is my belief that the house of war/beast will take on the aspect of death. It is my belief that is what hood asked of paran and the reason that they were able to revive Heboric (and what he did with the souls in the jade seems a tad too powerful for a mortal, not to mention that there was a voice showing him what to do, i am thinking that that voice was hood's). This would sort of explain the reason that Trake's mortal sword (i cannot remember his name, it has been a while since my last re-read) can command the dead and why Toc the undead is released back into the mortal world to join the wolves.
Lastly, unless i am mistaken are not the Bridgeburners the guardians of the dead(not too sure of this, but this is another link 'tween war and death) and we have been told that the beast hold is awaiting a final shaping. And like someone(iktovian?) has said, every war has too sides, so it is appropriate that 2 gods exist for it, but in the end, death is what lies at the end of all wars and the house of the dead takes the souls of all sides.
P.S. I realize the above is muddled, but i have just returned from a long days at work and i need rest, i will try to fix it on the morrow, but probably will not.

I recall Silverfox saying that the only reason Kellanved and Dancer did not become aspected to Death when they entered the Deadhouse was because Hood had that role. Maybe it will be forced upon them, though i doubt it.
