Reached the 10000 word mark on my thesis tonight. Feels good to be making progress. ;)

Found out more info about my Japanese relatives/ancestors today in my search to connect our descended line to the proper samurai lineage. So far I've been able to get back conclusively to the 17th century, but I lose the trail there. Thankfully I may have found a Japanese cousin on Facebook who could possibly shed more light on the matter.

This is all stuff that's only been recently revealed in my life and it fascinates me to no end. So it makes me very happy to keep discovering.

As it stands now I am pretty sure our family were vassal's of the Tokugawa Shogunate, but I'm not totally done researching it yet, but the location seems indicative of that lineage.

Post-Battle Of Sekigahara, most Noble people under Tokugawa's peace during the Edo period were, yes (peasant masses were not considered related). But my family traces back to a clan that were under him during the late Sengoku period prior to the battle and prior to the Shogunate in general, sort of a party to his inner circle as he rose to power...apparently. It made me feel a little more connected to him I guess. It's interesting getting your lineage to go back that far.

Hooray!

My family's got preposterously well-documented family trees lying about, so not much exciting there.

This has had me laughing like a freak for a while now:

And I WISH that I had well documented family trees, I've been trying to put together mine for what seems like an age now but I'm hampered by two things: when I go back further than my great-grandparents (especially on my dad's side) the documents are mostly in Arabic and I don't read Arabic so...yeah. Secondly, a lot of docs were lost in 1948 when my dad and his family fled to Lebanon. That said, he claims that we go back to the Crusader era but that's largely based on the fact that our family came from Acre...flimsy evidence, IMHO. Anyway! One day I might splurge and hire someone to do the research but until then, I'll live. ;)

My family history, further back than 1833 I should think, like that of most people whose families came from the West Indian colonies is, I'd hazard, probably something of a nightmare to figure out. Unless, that is, the plantation my ancestors were freed from had owners who kept a detailed stock book - which isn't unheard of; some of those people were a bit OCD about record keeping by all accounts. I'm not sure I could ever invest the time and effort into it; I suspect I'd find it far too depressing.

But anyway, on a less sombre note, I managed to requalify for my First Aid At Work Certificate today - which means I get another 3 years of roundly mocking people for being soft when they tell me they need a plaster for their paper cut (in such cases I have been tempted, on more than one occasion, to recommend lemon juice as a natural remedy for what ails them simply to see if they'd actually do it) and the occasional moment of stark terror when someone keels over in the office for no apparent reason.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Bertrand Russell

Well, my well-documentedness comes from several places.

1) landed nobility (and their obsessions with succession) in a few places (Germany/Estonia, Scotland)
2) A few generations of really bored Norweigians.
3) The American part of my family being part of the John Winthrop clan (of Mass. colonial-governorship fame).

Been reading about the trouple between some sets of supporters at the European Championships, and then saw this picture which made me laugh.

Two Irish lads doing their best Father Ted inspired effort to keep the peace in Poznan (apparently some Polish and Croatian fans had clashed and the riot police were out in force.

Hey, that's awesome! Hope you find an Ascendant or someone in your lineage :)

I ticked many boxes in my "get-stuff-ready-for-Africa" list: only a few more now. ;)

Mrs Dinivan doesn't mind at all that I woke up at 2:40 am to watch the match against the Dutchies, thus waking her as well and keeping her awake by watching the match on the notebook beside the bed (no other way to see it). She is not really interested in football (it is not the no 1 sport in China, after all), but she followed the match as well and truly cheered for Germany and was happy that we won. Quiet cheering of course, wouldn't want to wake up her parents after all).

I have the awesomest of awesome wives. ;)

I've spent the whole day in bed drinking chocolate milk and reading young adult fiction.
