Tolkien, the illustrated encyclopedia arrived today.
it was 1p (with £2.80 postage) on amazon used. It makes me happy because it's arrived and just flicking through it is bringing back so many memories of LotR and the silmarion.
but its slightly disappointing. the illustrations are wildly varying in quality and a lot are in the blocky modern style that I dislike. I was hoping for more beautiful pictures like my copy of LotR has.
oh well, still an excellent arrival.

now all i need is my new tablet to arrive, tracking says it left manchester at midnight, but won't be here till wednesday?
which means I won't see it till friday.

caught up on sleep after 3 exhausting evenings with not enough rest.

And no work I had to take home this weekend. I am looking forward to a lot of blissful laziness.

Me and Arrow the kite - my favourite, beautiful boy! What the picture doesn't convey is his never-ending fascination with pulling both the zip on my fleece and my scarf. He chitters away like an angry teenager if you move him out of reach as well

I feel like he's looking at your eyes with an awfully hungry expression.

That thing could probably kill me in five seconds. Beautiful bird though.

I am incredibly happy because in the space of only fifteen months, we have added another 1000 !!!!!! pages to the Wiki. Not only that, but the German version, thanks to the incredible efforts of Coltaine, has simultaneously reached page number 1000 !!!!!

For all the statistics check out:

Malazan Wiki 4000

German Wiki 1000

It would be great if you took a look and signed the guest book/Gästebuch

Hope you agree that we have come a long way :p

Well, you say that - I mean, he'd make a mess for sure, and if he hit something vital then yes you could bleed to death - but of any of the birds in the centre I'd much rather he bit me than any of the others - kites are scavengers and the biggest part of their diet is made up of carrion. The beak looks evil but isn't actually all that powerful - they can't break into bigger carcasses (deer, sheep etc) by themselves and only feed of those if something like a fox has already broken into the carcass. Live prey they're limited to really small mammals (rodents, mostly) and things like beetles. So, as our birds go, Arrow's a softy

Egwene - that's awesome news, well done to you all! :(

I love birds of prey. Such majestic creatures. Was lucky enough to get to photograph a bald eagle at a camera training workshop a couple of months ago. Now that's a big bird!! to feel the power of the wing strokes as it came in to land was amazing.

That's a beautiful shot! Tiste Sim got to hold our adult golden eagle when he came to visit, Shadow. Also rather large! :p large enough I don't handle them - I could pick them up, but ten pounds of bird on the end of my arm gets to be a bit much rather quickly. There are disadvantages to being 5'3" and about 9 stone wet through - they usually don't involve eagles though!

TRB, if you ever get the chance to come to Scotland, I highly recommend going to Blair Drummond Safari Park. They do bird shows 4/5 times throughout the day with a variety of birdes showcasing some of their best features and also educating the public.

The best parts are their 2 vultures (cant remember what breeds but one of them is massive), their Peregrine (called Sonic) where they showcase his speed using the training leash (think that's what its called, the thing they spin around) and my favourite is their SEA EAGLE!!! which they have just recently started to fly and when they do they have to walk to the other side of the loch to be able to properly showcase the size and strength and buy god she is a beaut. She is absolutely massive and you can see the power and the intellect when she is just sitting still. I believe that she is the only Sea Eagle in the UK that is used in shows too and as you will may know they are a native to our lands and it is good to see their population on the increase.

I'll bear it in mind, thank you! I love finding other good centres :p

It's a lure, for the peregrine. We've got a young one called Apollo who flies to a lure too - I will never, ever get tired of watching falcons fly.

I was given the RSPB book of British birds of prey for my birthday, and there's a lovely section on the White Tailed Sea Eagle - it's lovely to have them back, they were yet another species driven to extinction

Funny you should mention the White Tailed Sea Eagle, because where I'm working at the moment we have three of them (the male only just arrived) who are part of the European breeding programme so that their offspring can be re-introduced to the wild. In fact, at least 2 of the female's previous offspring (that I know of) have been released into the wild here in Ireland, which is a tremendous vindication of the breeding programme. Still a long way to go sadly. But hopefully the new male arrival will do his job :p

To add to the birds of prey happiness, the following doc is opening soon or has opened. It currently has a 93% tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.

I didn't know there was a movie about her! I read about her some time ago as a result of my love for all things Mongolian. I think Mighty Girl wrote about her on Facebook as well. I'm really keen to see this now!

The buzz about that documentary is massive. I fully expect it to be a frontrunner for the Oscar. Haven't heard a bad word about it.
