In HoC Onrack was so damaged that he was cut out from the Ritual and couldn't turn to dust anymore.
The Unbound are clearly in his same situatiom but when they attacked Heboric&Co they still rose up from the dust. The answer could be that they now use Chaos instesd of Tellan but in MoI Tool clearly stated that when they turn to dust T'lann Imass don't enter a warren.

Some thoughts?

Maybe there are different ways of becoming "unbound"? Remember Onrack was banished, others could have been unbound for different reasons (I remember a clan never made it on time to the ritual for example?).

Do we ever get the explanation as to why Tool is unbound? He wasn't banned, was he?

My memory is not the greatest, but seem to remember that Tool "Unbound"
meant something like he had no clan. Kilava killed everyone. Tool still turns
to dust and, I am pretty sure he follows the ritual as he tries really hard to
get Kilava to participate.

OK but Onrack's case is different. He had a clan, but he was banned from it

The amount of damage before a T'lan Imass is "unbound" is less then the amount of damage required before the T'lan Imass can no longer turn to dust. Onrack's crime did not get result in him being 'unbound', or else he would never have been hunting renegades with the rest of the Logos.

Onrack only became so damaged that he was unbound and unable to turn to dust when he fought the Deragoth.

The Unbound of the Dead Fires were damaged enough to be unbound and failed to accomplish their task so they were interred under rocks. They weren't so damaged that they could not turn to dust, however.

Tool is a special case. I wouldn't use him as an example for any other T'lan Imass. His being the First Sword yields special conditions, in addition to the fact this only surviving clan-member was not a part of the Ritual. Surrendering his sword (thus probably giving up the First Sword title) to Silverfox in the new realm, combined with who-knows-what other factors not only severed him from the Ritual, but actually restored him to his old self. I doubt this can happen with most T'lan Imass.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Good catch. There is a discrepency . . .

Firstly, Tool is clanness. His sister slaughtered his family and clan, to cut her ties with them -- and all also because they scorned her due to Dhryjnna's incitement. Tool was cut off from the Imass Control Centre, so to speak. He can still hear the Summons, still choose to obey -- but it's his choice. He is no longer compelled.

Imass like Onrack, as we know, when they sustain enough bodily damage can no longer dust travel. Yet the Unbound renegades did. Yet Emroth of Reaper's Gale didn't, though the warren they were in prevented such conveyance.

We don't really know if the Unbound when carrying Felisin to the hidden city in The Bonehunters dusted themselves or warrened -- the pov was Felisin's, and all she saw was a blurr around her.
If there were no smart people others wouldn't feel inadequate.

Right?
