First in, first out: Bridge Burner Motto

I'm just curious, and I don't actually know anything about this stuff, but isn't "first in, last out" also some kind of american military motto?
I remember something like that from "we were soldiers" with Mel Gibson. But maybe that was only referring to the commander himself, as we see in the film he's the first who steps on to the battlefield and the film practically ends with the picture of the commander lifting his foot from the ground as the chopper takes off.

I was referring to TTH, Pearl is carrying the fallen inside Dragnipur, and says "Do not pity me, please." to Ditch.

The U.S. Marine Corps official motto is Semper Fi. However, they have since WWII been used as shock troops in invasions, and are usually deemed "First in". Last out, on the otherhand, is usually not the idea, as they make poor Occupation troops.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I've yet to do a reread, but it was one of the lines that kind of stuck out. I did not remember Pearls line in GotM, and I guess that Pearl must be a bit of an oddity back where he comes from.

Poor Pearl, I'd forgotten all about him...
Also, Kelly's motto, to cut the previous one short: "Heads. Spikes. Walls." Although Tyrion from ASOIAF said it first, it has a certain nice ring to it that the Emperor would love...

I thought it weird that Pearl, a Korvala(sp?) demon was a kind of etheral entity in GotM but he was basically just a Kenrylalalala like demon in TTH.
Strange. Of course, I guess it would be hard to chain a glowing cloud of destruction

As noted else thread, 'first in, last out' is the unoffical motto of the Canadian Combat Engineers.
And Pearl was a Korvalah, not a Kenryryladida, so who says he can't have more than one form.
- Abyss, first out, man on second...

I don't know, I just weren't expecting a "normal" demon when pearl reappered.

I had the same reaction but figured it was a GotMism at worse and otherwise the demon had a smokey form and a big thunking bruiser form at best.
And either way he rocked the Dragnipur scenes.
- Abyss, likes smokey bacon

Quick Ben summoned him against the Tiste Andii. Here's the passage:
This isn't necessarily a contradiction. Compare it to Lorn summoning the Galayn Lord:
It's possible Pearl simply hadn't fully materialized yet.
Quote
The vial struck the rooftop and shattered with a thin tinkle. Beyond, the three assassins paused. Quick Ben remained, his eyes on the white smoke rising from the glass shards. A figure took form within the smoke, growing in size. Its shape was almost insubstantial, the smoke stretching like threads in places, curling like wool in others. All that was visible within it was its eyes, two black slits, which it slung to Quick Ben.
This isn't necessarily a contradiction. Compare it to Lorn summoning the Galayn Lord:
Quote
She rose and threw it across the street. The flask struck a stone wall and shattered. Glowing red smoke curled upward, slowly taking shape.
It's possible Pearl simply hadn't fully materialized yet.

Agreed, that's also possible.
Pearl is never clearly described. The bits we do get in TtH certainly suggest something Kenagorilla-like, but that doesn't mean much by itself.
- Abyss, more of a Kenachimpanzee....
