I should probably have titled the thread:-

What was Gothos' "Folly"?

If you had I would've been less sIlly.

Well, maybe not!

Gothos goes on with himself so much about how futile life is - because given enough time all deeds are erased from history etc. - that his 'Folly' (a treatise on every philosophical topic available, from every viewpoint imaginable) was so named because folly is exactly what he thought it was.

Am I redeemed?...

...OR DAMNED?

You're eekwibble.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I went through the Gothos part of TTH during a re-read last night, and there was an interesting little exchange with Nimander.

I don't have the book at work so this is paraphrasing...

Gothos: "an Azath house built on the blood of dragons--"
Nimander: "-- spilled blood! Spilled blood of DEAD dragons!"
Gothos: "Like that makes a difference. Dragons don't play games.
Nimander, you are an idiot! Oh me and my unending folly! I'd despair if I cared but I don't so i'll go make ashcakes."

:D

Bolded above for emphasis - he is quite clearly suggesting his folly (at least in this instance) is assuming that other beings have half a brain.

This passage coupled with Gothos earlier assertion that Anomander Rake is the only person he's ever respected gives some interesting insight.

I don't have the type of recall abilities some people on here do, but I was wondering what was going on with Gothos in general. Here are random facts I can actually recall.

1. Gothos willingly serves or works for the Azath corporation.
2. Gothos performed that freezing ritual that affected the Lether empire area in such an odd way.
3. Gothos designed an odd Finnest which shocked some elder gods.
4. Gothos is using one or several azath builders.
5. Gothos brother got the stuffing slapped out of him in MOI.

How do these, and the million facts i forgot, tie together? What's Gothos aim?

Incorrect, in fact theres a rather incosistent point.

If you read the section of TTH where Brood talks to Crone, he claims that the Jaghut war to this day with the Forkrul Assail. But I thought we were told they had only one great war, against death, unless the FA were involved somehow, on the other side perhaps.

Didn't the FA like killing lots of people to solve problems? Maybe they got along with the old Death God.

Urm.. I figured Gothos' folly was as much his continous atempts to influence the world and how it developes yet he is in a way cursed in that everything he does seem to have desasterous consequences. The freezing of Lether, or sending Nimander into the gate..

Soo, good intentions and all that

It's decent in the first of gentlemen

There were FA as well as eleint on the side of the Jaghut in that war.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Just vague speculation, but i figured Hood taking the position of King of HHDeath was the figurative victory at the end of the Jaghut war on Death.

As for the conflict with the FA that was hinted at, i suspect that post-dates the War on Death by a long time.

I wonder, pointlessly, whether the conflicts on Assail might not be between Jaghut possessed humans and the FA in some form, but that's utter guesswork.

As for Gothos' Folly itself, i agree its the nature of the book that made if Folly.

- Abyss, liked when Gothos freaked Kallor out with the Azath comment...
