This is a sketch I did a couple of months ago. It took me aboot 5 days all-in-all. It's not quite finished 'cause I'd like to change a few bits on the head (esp. the teeth - they're just fill-ins - :o ) and do a little more background.

Posted Image

I have ZERO previous artistic tutorage but I do like to find that creative spark once in a while.

It started off as Rake 'cause at the time of creation there was a big clamour for Rake pictures.

I intend/ed to put a Rake "face" over it and perhaps some Andii in a semicircle as it is supposed to be the arrival of Rake at the camp in MoI.

Please feel free to comment/critique/adapt/colour in/slate/whatever. :p

EDIT: (again) This is a photo of an A3ish size pad that's actually meant for watercolours. The pad has 12 sheets and cost me £7.99 from WHSmith so it was a bit dumb of me to sketch on a 70(ish) pence piece of paper. Ah well.

EDIT: 'Cause the pic was lost in the forum changover.

I like it, especially the wings and musculature. I don't think the teeth are bad at all. Are those horns on his head? The only critique I could give you is that, to me, it looks like it is frolicking a little. But the more I look at it the less of that I see, so it probably is just me.

In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

*dances along to Bruce Springsteen's I'm on Fire*

There are 3 horns, 1 pointing back to the centre of the other 2 from the snout.

The rest of that shit is supposed to be Rake's 'silver mane'.

Not easy to do when you're a no-mark wannabe. :(

Ahhh, yeah, okay. Hard to differentiate somethings w/out color. Good job my drunken buddy.

Keep it up, only criticism is there's something odd about the extended arm.

I was going to point out the same thing. Also, I find that he almost seems to be smiling. I don't know if that was intended or not but I would take a look at that again maybe.

Hmm, I'm not sure about the inverted joints on his forelimbs, and maybe they should be shorter - he always seems to describe them as having very powergul hind klegs, but not much up front (if you know what I mean;))

It's my 1st ever sketch so there's going to be some dodgy shit happening.

I'm going to change the mouth and probably a fair bit of the rest of the head coz SE goes on a lot about 'wedge-shaped' heads.

I deliberately made the front arms large just to emphasize power but I don't recall that much really aboot the books descriptions. In fact I tend to skip over descriptions of dragons ever since reading Robin Hobb. Not because of her descriptions, just because I didn't like the artwork on the book covers. Go figure!

@Brood - How do you draw hind klegs?:(

Your hind legs are fine, concentrate on the front ones.

I think the head is supposed to look like a wedge the other way around. In other words, the skull should be larger and then narrower the further to the end of the snout you come.

Does that even make sense?

I also think the neck is too thin to carry that head, and the forearm looks like it's broken.

But aside from that it looks pretty good:)

here are som refs if you need them:

Cheers guys.

I don't think you quite got what I was saying about future alterations though GH.

It's the fact that the head is supposed to be wedge shaped that's the reason for me wanting to change it. Some changes to the neck will come with that.

I get the general dislike for the forequarters and I'll do something aboot them too.

I'm very pleased with the positive comments so far. Thank you all!

EDIT: Bloody hell GH. That link to Hibbary's stuff on deviantart was fantastic. There's some amazing shit on there. Not that I mean it's shit... ah.. you know what I mean.
