How not to do an American accent

I can't say I've got an accent. Mine is more like the standard British English accent quite a lot of people speak, so its not the queen english, its not cockney(which movies then to like to use) or geordies, it just normal english. I never really ever have people ask me where I'm from or try to guess my accent as I don't really have one.
Even when I was deployed in Newcastle for a few months work, I didn't meet nearly as many people with the Geordie accent as I thought I would, quite a lot of them just spoke the normal style.
Even when watching American movies, you only really notice their accent if they're using a southern accent. Can't really say I notice the shortening of pronoucing words as the articles describes 'aah' etc.

Well the thing with accents is that any native speaker is going to be able to pick a fake eventually, no matter how good you are you just can't replicate an accent exactly. Look at Daphne in Frasier sh is ENglish and yet her supposed Manchester accent sounds nothing like Manchester, if I had to pick it I'd say Rochdale, it's even more hilarious when her brothers tip up and have really fdiverse accents. Anthony Lapaglia I can not forgive for his Mockney Man Utd fan,I can accept dreadful English accents from Americans but I expect much better of the Aussies
I speak with a fairly strong Bury accent that abot 75% lancashire and 25% Manchester, I sound nothing like Mezla regardless of pitch even though she lives about 15 miles away from me. I don't have the same accent as Imperial Historian and we live about 3 miles away from each other. I can tell the difference between a Bury and Bolton accent (about 3 miles) a Blackburn (about 15 Miles) Manchester (less than 10) and Scouse is poles apart (about 40 miles) Given this level of subtlety you'd struggle to ever replicate an accent exactly.

I can pass for a Northern Yankee. If I wanted too.
I can't, for the life of me, do accents.

Nope, the "aboot" gives all Canadiens away.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I've never, ever, ever met a Canuck who say's "aboot."
Now all the "eh's" attached to the end of every sentence I utter might give me away. Seriously, it's not joke. I can't control those "eh" bastards. They slip out all the time.

And every Canuck I met said the same thing and then said "aboot"!
I wonder how hard it would be to distinguish someone from MinnesOta from a Canadien. They have strange accents as well up there.

Oh I have. It's not common, but get 'em angry or drunk and one or two will slip out.

So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."
I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

"Aboot" isn't exactly right. It's more like "aboat".

I've heard them say "a" as in bad, "boot" as in the type of shoe.
But, then again, this is coming from a person who "fixes" dinner, evidently sounds like he's from the south when he's drunk, and constantly adds 's onto words making them possessive instead of plural. Okay, I'm an idiot.

Careful people, you're about to call a nerdy linguistics major down on you. Especially those of you who say you "dont have an accent".
I have a pretty standard accent for a young midwesterner. Not too different from what you might hear from an american newscast. I am a bit of a victim of the chicago "hard A". I pronounce "bagel" with a strong "bag" sound rather than "bay" - that sort of thing.

This annoys the fuck out of me, when midwesterners insist that the midwestern accent is not an accent, and this is why newscasters are from the midwest. Well, there are lots of newscasters with no accent, but there are some with midwestern accents. It is an accent.
The midwestern accent is close to the Canadian accent, but in my experience, the midwestern accent can be much more extreme than the Canadian one...

You need to brush up on your reading skills. I did NOT claim to have no accent. If you re-read my post (that section you quoted) I said I have the midwestern accent of a younger person (meaning I don't have a midwestern accent like a 60 year old male might), not unlike the accent you might hear on a newscast.

No one tends to think they have an accent, because they've grown up with it being spoken around them - thats how they got it in the first place!!
I can't hear my own accent at all... someone else would have to comment what it sounds like;)

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I agree Brood. And my accent would appear to have gotten stronger over the years. As if each time i've gone abroad and then moved back to Ireland was like a booster shot.
People used to comment on the fact that i had very little accent when i was young, so it was a huge surprise to me to hear my own voice on a tape one day by accident. I had no idea my accent was so strong. It took me about 2 minutes to realise that it was me speaking, and it was only by process of elimination since none of the others were Irish!
I have a proper Cork accent, which is easily the best Irish accent.
And if you want to hear speed talking, then just get two native Cork city people to 'have a chat'.

I'm told that when I came back from Australia, I had a definite aussie hint in my accent, but damned if I could hear it;) And that was for 6 months, so you can pick up stuff fairly quickly. My sister had the same after she lived in Canadia for almost a year.
