How not to do an American accent

I found this interesting: http://news.bbc.co.u...ine/7509572.stm
I've always found accents interesting, the above does show some of the differences between the way British talk and the American's do. How good are you at doing an American accent? or British Accent?

I just saw this too, it is quite interesting. I think a lot of people trying to do American accents end up just drawling and sound like people trying to do American accents;) On the other hand, I've hardly ever met anyone not from Britain who could do an even close to realistic-sounding British accent (not even a geordie one, which just requires you to turn your tongue inside out and garble so no one can understand you!)

According to the article, you need to keep your mouth wide, like a smile, and I must admit it is quite difficult to keep your mouth wide while talking, if you do that for a while your jaws are likely to start hurting. But yes, you do you notice in films American's do generally speak with their mouth wider than us Brits, and those with a stronger accent even more.
From the article:
Follow these instructions to start learning an American accent:
Round the rugged rock, the ragged rascal ran.
Saying 'l' as you do the final letters in bell, well and level, read the following:
Lucky Lily liked to live in Louisiana.
Barbara Berkery's advice: "Let yourself go, and have fun."
From the article:
Follow these instructions to start learning an American accent:
- Widen your mouth, as you would making the 'ee' sound in weed
- Smile, to place the voice towards your nasal resonator
- Position your tongue further up in the mouth, rather than against the ridge behind the top teeth

This was very interesting. I can't do accents to save my life. It i funny that people attempting American accents always go for southern it seems.
Oh, and for the record, Hugh Laurie does not have a perfect American accent. It's good, but even before I knew he was British I knew he was not a native American English speaker. It's off sometimes.

try listening to actors doing Irish accents. It's horrible. They sound like they're doing a tour of ireland as their accent jumps from one county to the next, and back again.
I still want to give Tom Cruise a good kicking for the crime that was "Far and Away". I'm sure there were even a few "top of the morning" quotes, and nearly a "begosh and begorrah". All they were short of was a fucking leprechaun!!!!
Most people will try a southern accent when trying to do an American accent, because it sounds so strong and distinct, which makes it easier to mimic. A New Yawk accent would be next I'd say.

I don't think I have any accent what-so-ever.
But I'm not southern or from any state that has any sort of distinct accent.

So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."
I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

I hate fake southern accents. People may think it's easier to mimic, but just because you drawl the fuck out of your words doesn't make it right...
I don't have much of a southern accent at all, despite being from MS, but dammit, I can fake one.

I think there is difference between "Southern" accents and "hillbilly" accents. Southern accent sounds kind of British, while hillbilly sounds like an inbred and doesn't speak real words.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

< Hillbilly accent. Just ask bubba. he laughs his ass off when he hears how southern I am. But on the bright side, I know how to read.

How on earth does a Southern accent sound "kinda British"?
And there are several different flavors of the drawl accent, whether it's southern or hillbilly. I've pretty much heard them all, and most of the attempts at southern accents I hear in movies and such are just fake. No one really talks like that.

Did you watch that clip? Southern accents tend to drawl the word out more than a Northern or Midwestern clip. That's what I meant by that statement.

I just speak like I normally do, except I end every sentence with 'y'all'.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

With the yankee accent i thought it was ok until i realised i was using about ten different regiosn so it was pretty clearly false
