The excellent comedy murder mystery series Ludwig (starring David Mitchell and the incredible Anna Maxwell Martin) is back for series 2 next week so we're reaching S1 in readiness. Truly great stuff.

We've just finished doing exactly the same :D

We finished series 2 of Ludwig this weekend and it remains as strong as the first series. I think unlike a lot of other cosy crime series it can't run forever, and I hope they let it go out on a high. If you asked a committee to design a perfect role for David Mitchell, I don't think they could have done much better than John Taylor.

Have discovered today that there is a Christmas special coming, as well as a green light for series 3. Happy days!

Huh, I knew nothing about this show, but as a massive fan of Peep Show, and therefore David Mitchell, I'm gonna check it out!

It's not at all like Peep Show but it is wonderful and wholesome.

Oh for sure, that's just my only real touchstone for Mitchell. I'll definitely be watching.

I’ve been going through all of the old must-watch shows that people always recommend. It’s been a pretty good streak of mostly good tv. Mr robot, mad men, 6 feet under, succession, deadwood, in the middle of boardwalk empire right now, first season of severance and Pluribus, Barry, and probably a couple I’m forgetting. It’s hbo heavy because I recently got access to hbo after not having it for a long time. Fun times.

I was just thinking about Barry, what a gloriously unhinged show that was. Absolutely brilliant!

I've just seen that they're going to make an American Ludwig adaptation and, I just... No.

I still recall them making American remakes of THE IT CROWD, and not even Richard Aoyade could save it, and COUPLING which just didn't translate,

And what's funny if they try to do 1:1 scripts between the British actors and the American ones and it NEVER lands. The only way THE OFFICE became what it did was when it stoped trying to be British Office and became its own thing.

Oh lord no.

Mind you, I avoided the American remake of Ghosts like the plague for similar reasons and keep being told it's excellent. Any input from anyone on here?

Can't watch, too scary.

Various US networks have tried to adapt Peep Show five different times, though, and all of them fizzled at the pilot stage.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

This is it, the US office is good after they stop trying to be the UK one and does its own thing (it helps that Mike Schur is excellent!)

TRB - I'm exactly the same, some people have told me the US Ghosts is actually pretty good but I just can't...

The US does make some top quality TV so they should stop trying to steal British ideas and stuff.

So, among other things I've been watching recently, I decided to watch the second series of Sandman.

Yes, I know. I shouldn't be giving time to anything that rapist is involved with but my reasoning is this - it was basically already made when the allegations came out and I wasn't on Netflix at the time so I do not feel as if my contribution is going to have major impact like a year later.

So that aside, The Sandman has long been one of my favourite stories of all time. I have all the collections and extras. I have listened to the audio adaptations. The first season of this show was outstanding. I was excited to watch series two all things considered.

And it's... Not very good? Like, I have been pretty bored most of the way through? These are stories I know and love (s2 for example covers the story where he has to decided who gets to be in charge of hell, a great story!) but I've just not really been interested at all.

I'm not sure what it is - the actors are, on the whole, doing a good job as their characters (I love Delirium!) I think I've watched 8/12 episodes and I don't really have any desire to watch any more...

Different show, though linked - this is exactly how I felt about the second series of Good Omens. On the one hand I could watch Sheen and Tennant all day long, but on the other hand it just never maintained my interest in what was going on at all.

Do you think it's the Gaiman effect? Like he's tainted everything? This is the only thing of his I've interacted with since all of the stuff came out so I have nothing to compare it to.

I think show runners and writers on the whole today have a hard time engaging well with the 90s Goth culture or the 90s recovery from Thatcher cultural landmarks.

The ones who can take the rather challenging premises of Sandman or Good Omens and adapt them to TV are few and far between. They also probably want to work on higher wages and maybe different shows.

I think it could well be both of the above.

I don't really want to engage with anything to do with either Neil Gaiman or Amanda Palmer post everything coming out, so I imagine that was sitting in the back of my mind trying to watch series 2.

On amph's point, as much as Neverwhere is one of my favourite books, I struggle to imagine a theoretical adaption for TV being made now capturing the aesthetic and feel of it particularly well.

I missed this new trailer that dropped at NYCC. I really can't wait for this show, it looks so great and I love that things have flipped since 2049 and now the Replicants have the upper hand, or seem to.

And my goodness Hunter Schafer continues to be stunning.
