Azath Houses

On page 229 of the UK edition of RG in Taralack Veed's thoughts it mentions
"The nameless had knelt on the threshold of stone for too long. Worshipping a house, its heaved grounds, its echoing rooms - why not the living, breathing ones who might dwell within that house? Why not the immortal builders?"
I presume the houses that it refers to is the Azath House, for he is musing on Icarium, so who are its immortal builders? I thought the current theory was that it is a natural occurence, an immune system, I think the analogy goes. If so who build it?

It's an interesting question. I'm not really sure what to make of it.
I would ask a different question though, how the hell does a grall warrior know that much about the Azath and the Nameless Ones? Veed was a tool, an agent for the Nameless Ones, I don't see why they would offer him any information he did not need...

Mappo has lived 500 years in the company of Icarium. He's had plenty of time to seek out temples and scholars and he's probably even had meetings with other Nameless Ones.

Well even Veed could be 500 years old who knows.

From what we hear of his POVs in BH I doubt he's anything more than a mortal man.

Yes but h had to take Mappo's place so he had to larn such things o fool Icarium in making him think he had been wiyh him for 500 years

Hmm. Interesting argument. It would be logical that the Namless Ones taught Veed all about Icarium... but that still would not explain his knowledge of the Azath.
I guess Veed was able to learn more than the Nameless Ones intended.

I think Veed might be making a more metaphysical point in his musings -- I'm not sure he's claiming he knows there are builders of the Azath specifically, but more that their existence is perhaps predicated upon other forces, other causes-and-effects, that they are not necessarily causes unto themselves.
Why worship a house? Why not the ground the house rests on, or the wind that blows past it? I think that's his point -- why worship a specific object that may be but one manifestation of power; why not the power itself, or some other manifestation.
I don't think the quote is meant to imply that Veed has specific or credible knowledge of the Azath in the way you're suggesting. This is just my opinion, of course. I'm just not feeling him being a master of mysterious Azath knowledge. But who knows. This is SE. And SE be bangin.

He may be thinking that precisely because he knows less about Azath houses than we do. He didn't see the Finnest come into existence in Darujhistan, or the Kettle-house in the hidden Tlan warren. He doesn't know how Azath houses are created, so he assumes someone makes them, and it's not that farfetched to assume anyone with the power to do that would be immortal.
I read what he said more as speculation along the lines of "Yeah, Azath houses are something very special indeed, but instead of worshipping the house, why not worship whoever built it? She/he/it must be really impressive!"

On House ranks:
I've always wondered....since being Mortal Sword of "insert something awsim here" equals Knight in the Houses, what of Shield Anvil and Destriant? priest and Soldier, hm....

My view on this is:
Champion of a Hold equals Knight of a House - Mortal Sword is something from back when there were Elder Gods, etc. that weren't a part of the system, unalligned.
That's why Fener had a MS, Destriant and SA. He didn't have a House.
Mortal Sword isn't the exact same as a Knight. A knight serves a house. A Mortal Sword serves a God.

I thought that Fenrir [B]was[B] part of a house. Didn't he hold king or something in High House War?

Clever, Apt. However, in BH, Dassem is mentioned as the MS of Hood-in reality if not name. That last bit is quoted, directly.

@ Osserics... the house of war came about after fener was ousted from his realm. i dont think he ever had a place in a house.
and interesting point AIJ. didn't work out too well for the god though

she's sitting in Tremorlor indeed, with a ton of wounds that she'd have died from long since. If Hood needed her to die, then he didn't get her, but if all that was required was some of her blood, he probably had more then enough.
